The method comprises the steps supplying a first fuel flow through the main fuel supply () and the pilot fuel supply (), monitoring a composition of the first fuel, monitoring combustion instability, reducing the first fuel flow through the pilot fuel supply () to zero when the first fuel composition has a) a hydrogen content ≥5% by volume and/or b) a high-HC content ≥5% by volume and the combustion instability <a predetermined value.

Method of operating a combustor for a gas turbine

A gas turbine engine includes combustion apparatus defining a volume, a compressor, a cooling air supply feed from the compressor, and a Helmholtz resonator. The Helmholtz resonator has a neck and a chamber having an attenuation volume and which is in fluid communication with the attenuation volume, the cooling air supply feed is connected to the Helmholtz resonator and includes a valve arrangement. In a first engine operating condition, the valve arrangement is closed and the Helmholtz resonator attenuates acoustic frequencies in a first range and, in a second engine operating condition, the valve arrangement is open whereby cooling air purges the attenuation volume and the Helmholtz resonator attenuates acoustic frequencies in a second range.

Combustor apparatus with bleed arrangement and resonator with cooling flow and method of operating combustor apparatus

A combustor assembly of a gas turbine engine having a trapped vortex feature to reduce emissions where the trapped vortex is formed using ammonia injected into an annular cavity located in a wall surrounding a combustion chamber of the combustor assembly. The annular cavity, and therefore the trapped vortex, is positioned such that when the combustion occurs within the combustion chamber the position of the annular cavity, and therefore of the trapped vortex, is downstream of a flame front. The emissions resulting from combustion travel through the combustion chamber and pass by the annular cavity before exiting the combustion chamber. The trapped vortex in the combustion chamber supplies NHradicals, resulting from the ammonia of the trapped vortex, to the passing by emissions and converts NOx and/or NO in the emissions to non-polluting products, mainly water and nitrogen.

A controller for a gas turbine is arranged to supply a load L. The gas turbine includes a fuel supply arranged to supply fuel at a fuel flow rate FF to a combustor, wherein the fuel supply includes a first fuel supply and a second fuel supply. The controller is arranged to determine one or more ratios R of one or more combustor operating parameters COP respectively at the load L to respective reference combustor operating parameters COPR at a reference load LR. The controller is further arranged to control a proportion P of the fuel flow rate FF supplied via the first fuel supply based, at least in part, on the determined one or more ratios R. A burner for a gas turbine engine has a combustion chamber and a swirler adapted to guide a swirler air flow to the combustion chamber, wherein the swirler has a first wall confining the swirler air flow as well as a second wall confining the swirler air flow on the same side as and downstream with respect to the swirler air flow from the first wall and being displaced with respect to the first wall in a direction away from the swirler air flow so that a step being able to cause a flow separation of the swirler air flow is formed by the first wall and the second wall, wherein the second wall has a through hole in its surface adapted to inject a liquid fuel into the swirler air flow.

Method and equipment for combustion of ammonia

In a method and system for the combustion of ammonia, wherein a first combustion chamber receives ammonia and hydrogen in controlled proportions, and an oxygen-containing gas such as air. Combustion of the ammonia and hydrogen produces nitrogen oxides among other combustion products. A second combustion chamber receives the nitrogen oxides along with further ammonia and hydrogen in further controlled proportions along with further oxygen-containing gas such as air. The nitrogen oxides are combusted into nitrogen and water.

Gas turbine system

A gas turbine engine having a combustor, turbine and transition duct to channel hot gas from combustor to turbine. The transition duct has an internal surface on which the hot gas impinges causing a varying temperature profile. A thermal barrier coating is located on the internal surface having a first and second thermal barrier coating patch. The first patch having a first thickness located on the internal surface and within a first area subject to a higher temperature than an uncoated part and bounded by a first isotherm of a first temperature. The second patch having a second thickness located on the internal surface and within a second area subject to a higher temperature than the uncoated part and bounded by a second isotherm of a second temperature. The second temperature is higher than the first temperature and the second thickness is thicker than the first thickness.

The resonator device may comprise: a container filled with a gas; an opening in the container; and a heating element adapted to generate a flame. The flame is arranged to heat the gas within the container. The resonator device is comprised in a combustion arrangement comprising a combustion chamber for defining a combustion space for burning fuel. The container is connected to the combustion chamber such that an inside of the container is in communication with the combustion space via the opening. The resonator device has a resonance frequency equal to a pressure oscillation frequency within the combustion chamber under normal load conditions.

A combustion arrangement for a turbine is provided including: a casing; a combustion chamber within the casing, an inner casing volume may be defined as a volume inside the casing but outside the combustion chamber; a partitioning wall partitioning the inner casing volume into first and second volume portions, the partitioning wall may have at least one aperture to allow fluid communication between the first and second volume portions; and a valve may be arranged at the casing to allow an outgoing fluid flow from the inner casing volume to an outside of the casing depending on a valve operating position. The combustion chamber has a combustion entry port for supplying an oxidant into the combustion chamber, where the combustion entry port may be in fluid communication with the first volume portion. The arrangement may be adapted to adjust the valve operating position for damping an oscillation of the arrangement.
