Various embodiments are described that relate to a smart card. When not connected to an external system, such as a laptop computer, the smart card can be configured to power itself. Thus, various functions can be practiced on the smart card in absence of connection to the external system. Example functions of the smart card can include user identification and authorization. In addition, the smart card can be configured to distinguish between different users and provide different access levels to different users and/or difference access to containers resident within the smart card. This can be done prior to when the smart card is connected to the external system.

Multi-function smart communication card

The network switch is configured to enable monitoring of switched data. The network switch includes a housing and one or more port cards. Each port card has one or more physical ports and includes switching circuitry to selectively create a communication path between two physical ports. The network switch also includes packet analyzer circuitry, situated within the housing, to monitor data packets switched via a communication path between two physical ports without substantially degrading signal integrity of the data packets.

A video decoder compliant with the Advanced Television Systems Standard (ATSC) includes circuitry which, when the decoder is operated in a first mode, decodes a Main Profile, High Level (MP&commat;HL) image to produce a high-definition video output signal and decodes a Main Profile, Main Level (MP&commat;ML) signal to produce a standard definition video signal. In addition, when the decoder is operated in a second mode, circuitry is used which generates a standard definition image from the MP&commat;HL signal. The video decoder includes a frequency-domain filter to reduce the resolution of the MP&commat;HL signal when the decoder is operated in the second mode.
