Disclosed are stabilized aliphatic polyester compositions comprising an aliphatic polyester, a HALS, and a tris-aryl-S-triazine UV absorber that show low embrittlement, haze formation, and discoloration during weathering. Also disclosed are aliphatic polyester compositions comprising aliphatic polyester, a hindered amine light stabilizer, a triazine UV absorber, and a phosphite that exhibit low color prior to weathering but retain good clarity, color, and excellent impact strength after exposure to weathering conditions. The aliphatic polyester compositions may be used prepare shaped articles such as, for example, films, sheets, bottles, tubes, profiles, fibers, and molded articles.

An ultraviolet absorption composition has been developed for the protection of packaging or container contents in the ultraviolet range of 290 nm to 390 nm, offering effective screening from all wavelengths of solar radiation. A combination of an optical brightener with an ultraviolet absorber has been found to provide effective screening without adding significant color to the polymer composition. This extended range of ultraviolet blocking over what can be achieved with ultraviolet absorbers alone is especially valuable in food and drink packaging applications where the contents of the packages need ultraviolet protection to prevent discoloration or development of undesirable flavors.

Optical brighteners are widely used for decreasing the apparent yellowness of polymeric materials. Polyethylene, as a coating film for photographic paper has presented unique problems because of its general lack of compatibility with conventional, large, fluorescent brightener molecules. The present invention provides a solution to this problem by incorporating into the polyethylene an optical brightener compatibilizing amount of a second polyolefin having alkyl groups pendant from the polymer backbone which serves to reduce the exudation of the optical brightener in articles or substrates comprised of or coated with such compositions.

Non-exuding optically brightened polyolefin blends

A blend of optical brighteners includes (a) from about 45 to 95 weight % of a mixture of benzoxazolyl stilbenes; and (b) from about 55 to about 5 weight % of at least one bis(benzoxazolyl)naphthalene based brightener, bis(benzoxazolyl)thiophene based brightener, a pyrazoline based brightener, a coumarin based brightener, and mixtures thereof, wherein the weight percents of the optical brightener blend are based on the total weight of optical brighteners in the blend. The optical brightener blend is useful for admixing with a polyolefin resin which in turn may be used for photo imaging applications.

A thermoplastic polyolefin composition suitable for use as a coating for a photographic support includes an optical brightener and a polar additive. Provided is a facile three step process for preparing 2-phenylterephthalic acid starting with p-xylene, followed by alkylation, dehydrogenation, and oxidation of the methyl groups corresponding to the origional p-xylene. The product, 2-phenylterephthalic acid, is useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of polyesters comprised of residues of 2-phenylterephthalic acid.
