A method and device for laser drilling in which the geometric form of the drill-hole wall is influenced by reciprocal action between a laser beam and a supplied process gas, which thereby is ionized to plasma. Furthermore, the outlet opening of the drill hole is influenced by a suitable arrangement of a backing.

Method and device for laser drilling in a process gas atmosphere

A method and a device for producing holes in workpieces by using at least one laser beam, in particular a short-pulse or ultrashort-pulse laser beam, whereby a process gas is supplied to the point of contact of the laser beam with the workpiece. At least one parameter of the process gas, i.e., its composition, pressure, volume flow, for example, is selected and the process gas is supplied to the interaction zone between the laser beam and the workpiece in such a way that the hole produced by the laser beam has a desired quality (hole geometry, reduced ablation residues, or none at all, etc.).

A device for introducing holes into a workpiece has a laser beam source for producing at least one laser beam which may be directed toward the workpiece. A nozzle system is provided having at least one nozzle which may have a gas under pressure applied to it, the gas flow exiting the nozzle being aligned in relation to the workpiece surface in such a way that molten particles detached from the workpiece are guided away from the hole produced by the laser beam.
