This application relates to novel 4 cyanophenyl derivatives which are useful for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia and pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds as the active ingredients.

Ortho-para-substituted phenoxy-hydroxypropylamines having the general formula ##STR1## and pharmaceutically acceptable, non-toxic acid addition salts thereof, wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R.sup.2 is alkoxyalkyl or alkylthioalkyl, and R.sup.3 is halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, alkoxymethyl, or alkoxy are disclosed, as are methods for their preparation.
