Vanadium pentoxide can be reduced to the +4 oxidation state from the +5 state, in the manufacture of vanadium-phosphorus-oxide catalyst precursor, (VO).sub.2 H.sub.4 P.sub.2 O.sub.9, by using phosphoric acid as the reducing agent rather than benzyl alcohol. Use of an alkyl silicate with the phosphoric acid insures the correct crystalline species, (VO).sub.2 H.sub.4 P.sub.2 O.sub.9, as indicated by X-ray diffraction.

Preparation of vanadium-phosophorus-oxide catalyst precursor

The color of alkyl vanadate compounds that have become discolored is improved by treating the vanadates with an oxygen-containing gas, e.g., air, preferably at elevated temperature.

Alkyl vanadate color improvement

The yield of alkyl vanadate formed by the reaction of vanadium pentoxide and an alkyl alcohol in the presence of an azeotroping agent and, preferably, a catalyst is improved by the present invention. It involves lowering, prior to the reaction, the amount of vanadium having a valence lower than +5 in the vanadium pentoxide reagent.

Process for the manufacture of alkyl vanadates

A method of treating the residue generated in the production of diphenylphosphinous chloride is presented. The method comprises extracting the aluminum content of the residue by contacting the residue with an organic solvent to produce a mixture which when hydrolyzed results in a two-phase solution, the organic phase of which can be incinerated.

Alkyl vanadates are formed by the reaction of vanadium pentoxide and an alkyl alcohol in the presence of an azeotroping solvent to assist in the removal of byproduct water, using an effective amount of a basic nitrogenous compound as a catalyst.

Process for forming alkyl vanadates using a catalyst

Mono-alkyl acid phosphates having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is straight or branched alkyl having from 1 to about 25 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting alcohol with P.sub.2 O.sub.5 in the presence of tetrasodium pyrophosphate and hydrogen peroxide. The process involves initially adding P.sub.2 O.sub.5 to a mixture of alcohol and tetrasodium pyrophosphate followed by continuous or sequential addition of water and hydrogen peroxide, P.sub.2 O.sub.5 (in stoichiometic excess) and then alcohol. Additional hydrogen peroxide is added at the end of the reaction. A mixture of mono- and di-alkyl acid phsophate is obtained with a mono-content of over about 70 percent by weight.
