The present invention is directed to a closure for a container. In one of the embodiments provided herein, the closure is provided with a roof portion, a shoulder portion that merges with the roof portion, and a skirt portion depending from the shoulder portion. Provided on the shoulder portion are recessed regions and full-depth regions. The recessed regions and full-depth regions alternate around the shoulder portion and are provided for improving a number of manufacturing, costs, and structural factors. In another embodiment provided herein, the closure is provided with a cylindrical skirt depending substantially from a roof portion, the cylindrical skirt having an inner wall with a plurality of narrow, elongated, vertical stand-off ribs thereon, the ribs having an upper edge below a tension ring and a lower edge below the upper edge and an elongated length causing the lower edge to be positioned about 50% to 25% above a bottom edge defined by the cylindrical skirt and measured against the entire length of the cylindrical skirt.

There is described a closure comprising a wall defining an aperture and a membrane frangibly connected to the wall and closing the aperture. The frangible connection between the membrane and the wall lies in a plane which is inclined to a plane perpendicular to an axis of the aperture.

There is described a neck structure in combination with a closure. The neck structure defines a neck opening with a cylindrical sealing surface surrounding the neck opening and an external neck surface. The closure comprises a cap formed of resilient material having a top and a downwardly extending skirt portion depending from the top. An annular plug depends from an underside of the top and one or more ribs are formed on an internal surface of the downwardly extending skirt portion. The annular plug and the one or more ribs are arranged concentrically and are dimensioned such that, upon application of the cap to the neck structure, the annular plug projects into the neck opening and engages the cylindrical sealing surface. At the same time the one or more ribs engage the external neck surface. The annular plug is adapted to flex away from the cylindrical sealing surface upon the build up of excess pressure within the closure whereupon circumferentially spaced ends of the or each rib define therebetween a path for the venting of fluid to release the excess pressure. There is also described a closure for use with a neck structure.

A method and applicator for applying a threaded cap to a threaded neck of a container. The method includes the steps of placing the cap on the neck of the container, rotating the cap relative to the neck in an opening direction while supporting the cap with respect to the neck, and applying the cap to the neck so as to achieve substantial thread engagement. A reverse drive mechanism may be used with the applicator.
