Radiation-curable oligomers radiation-curable compositions, coated optical glass fibers, and ribbon assemblies

A fast curing radiation-curable composition useful as coating compositions for inner and outer primary coatings, inks, ribbons other matrix material coating layers for coating and surrounding optical fibers. The improved radiation-curable compositions, having a propoxylated monomer or oligomer component, demonstrate unexpectedly fast cure speeds while providing strong adhesion characteristics to a variety of substrates and can also be used as a general radiation-curable adhesive or can be adapted for use in the specialized process of digital versatile disk (DVD) production.

Radiation-curable composition having high cure speed

Provided is a ribbon assembly having the functional capability of providing mid-span access without the use of additives, monomers or oligomers containing fluorine or silicone. The ribbon assembly is formulated from an oligomer which reduces the surface energy of the ink coating and/or the matrix material.

Optical glass fiber ribbon assemblies and radiation-curable compositions

Provided is a radiation curable coating composition suitable for coating optical glass fiber, having a viscosity in the range of about 10 mPas to 10,000 mPas made of about 20 to about 99.9 weight % of at least one of a thermoplastic non-crosslinking polymer and an ethylenically-unsaturated oligomeric compound; optionally, from 0 to about 60 weight % of an ethylenically-unsaturated diluent, optionally, from 0 to about 60 weight % of a multifunctional ethylenically-unsaturated compound, and optionally, from 0 to about 10 weight % of a photoinitiator, provided that if the thermoplastic non-crosslinking polymer is present and no ethylenically-unsaturated oligomeric compound is present, then the ethylenically-unsaturated diluent is present in an amount up to about 60 weight % and the multifunctional ethylenically-unsaturated compound is present in an amount up to about 60 weight %. The composition provides a tack-free handeable fiber after radiation cure and is fugitive upon thermolysis. Also provided is an optical fiber coated with the coating composition.

A method of coating a concrete floor is disclosed in which the concrete surface is coated with a homogeneous liquid coating composition containing maleate or fumarate unsaturation in combination with vinyl ether unsaturation and a ketonic photoinitiator, the wet coating is allowed to seep into the concrete surface and to flow out on the concrete surface to form a smooth coating, and this coating is cured by exposing it at light having a wavelength in the range of from about 200 to about 600 nanometers.

Method of coating concrete floors with photocurable coatings

A cationically curable polyurethane composition comprises the reaction product of an organic polyisocyanate with a transvinylation polyhydric alcohol mixture containing hydroxy groups. The polyisocyanate consumes substantially all of the available hydroxy groups in the transvinylation polyhydric alcohol mixture. These compositions are particularly useful in stereolithography. A method of transvinylation utilizing ultrasonic energy is also disclosed.

Cationically curable polyurethane compositions having vinyl ether

A photocurable ethylenically unsaturated liquid coating composition consisting essentially of: 1- polyethylenically unsaturated material in which the ethylenically unsaturated groups are polymerizable groups which are not (meth)acrylate groups; 2- a polyamine resin; and 3- an hydroxyalkyl phenone photoinitiator to speed the cure. The photocure rate is also speeded by combining a tertiary amine-functional acrylic copolymer, an allyl-functional resin, and a maleate-functional resin in a weight ratio of about 15-65/5-45/30-70. In preferred practice both expedients are used to maximize the cure speed.

Photocurable polyamine-ene compositions having improved cure speed

An ultraviolet curing liquid coating composition which, when cured with ultraviolet light in the presence of an appropriate photoinitiator, provides a coating adapted for the coating of optical glass fiber. This coating composition comprises as the essential component, an acrylate-terminated polyurethane oligomer based on a polyfunctional core which is at least trifunctional and which supports one branch for each functionality in the core. Each of the branches leads to an acrylate-functional terminal group, with there being from about 150 to about 2500 units of molecular weight in each branch between the trifunctional core and the acrylate-functional terminal group. Depending primarily upon the molecular weight of the branches, one can provide coating compositions for buffer coat, single coat or topcoat use.

Ultraviolet curable coatings for optical glass fiber based on a

Ultraviolet curing oligomers and liquid coating compositions based thereon are disclosed which cure with ultraviolet light in the presence of a photoinitiator. The coating compositions can provide either a single coating for optical glass fiber which resists microbending difficulties down to around -40.degree. C., or a topcoat for overcoating softer buffer coatings which resist microbending down to around -60.degree. C. The coating compositions consist essentially of the linear polyacrylate-terminated polyurethane polyurea oligomer in admixture with an ultraviolet curable liquid acrylate or polyacrylate to provide the liquidity needed for application and to adjust the hardness or softness of the cured coating for the selected single coat or topcoat utility. The oligomer contains a linear polyurethane core terminated by urea formation with a polyhydroxy-functional amine containing a single isocyanate-reactive amino hydrogen atom. The plurality of hydroxy-terminated branches provided by the amine are capped with an acrylate-functional compound, and the several acrylate-functional branches increase the toughness and the cure speed.

Ultraviolet curable optical glass fiber coatings from acrylate

There is disclosed linear polymers and copolymers of polymerized monoethylenically unsaturated monomers having a weight average molecular weight from about 1,500 to about 15,000, with most of the polymer ends being terminated with hydroxyl groups, one at each end of the polymer molecule. These polymers have an average of from about 1.6 to 5 hydroxyl groups per polymer molecule. Thermosetting coating compositions containing these polymers are also disclosed. The monomers which are polymerized may include a small proportion of hydroxy-functional monomers, but desirably consist of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers lacking hydroxyl functionality. The polymers are produced by polymerizing the monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in organic solvent solution medium containing a free radical initiator and a proportion of a chain-terminating agent which is a bis hydroxyorganic xanthogen disulfide in which the organic group is preferably an alkylene group contains from 2-18 carbon atoms to provide the desired molecular weight. The polymers are preferably liquid to slowly flowable at room temperature in the absence of organic solvent.

Hydroxyl-terminated polymers

An hydroxy-functional polyurethane reaction product is disclosed which enables the provision of thermosetting solution coating compositions which cure at low temperature to form flexible coatings. These polyurethanes are provided by the reaction of an organic diisocyanate with a stoichiometric excess of an essentially linear hydroxy-functional polyester which is the polyesterification reaction product of C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof with a stoichiometric excess of C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 aliphatic diol providing an alcohol/acid molar ratio of 3/2 to 6/5. The reaction is substantially complete as indicated by an acid number less than 10, and the diisocyanate is used in an amount providing an NCO/OH ratio of from 2/3 to 12/13. The thermosetting solution coating composition is provided by an organic solvent having dissolved therein from 5-50% of total resin solids of a curing agent reactive with hydroxy groups together with the polyurethane which has been described. The preferred curing agent is a partially methylolated melamine which contains from about 5 mol percent to about 40 mol percent of the methylol group.

Low temperature-curing polyester urethane systems

A modified polyepoxide is disclosed which cures with an amine-functional curing agent at room temperature to form coatings having better flexibility and resistance to Skydrol hydraulic fluid. This modified polyepoxide is the reaction product of a diurethane diisocyanate with a resinous polyepoxide having a molecular weight of from about 500 to about 1000 and a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of from about 1.5 to about 2.0. The diurethane diisocyanate is reacted with the resinous polyepoxide in an amount of from about 1.5 moles to about 16 moles per 100 moles of the polyepoxide. The diurethane diisocyanate is itself the reaction product of a dicarbinol-terminated polydimethyl polysiloxane having a molecular weight of from about 1000 to about 4000 with substantially a 2:1 stoichiometric excess of an organic diisocyanate.
