A gas generator includes an ignition charge, at least one ignition element for igniting the ignition charge, a storage chamber containing a compressed gas, which storage chamber is closed by a closure element, and an impact element destroying the closure element under pressure. A piston is provided as the impact element, which piston, after the destruction of the closure element, forms an exit gap with the opening closed by the closure element. The cross-sectional area of which exit gap changes in according to the position of the piston.

A gas generator, especially for an airbag of a vehicle having a cylindrical outer tube, open end faces of which are closed by cover elements, comprising an inner tube of smaller diameter which is arranged coaxially inside the outer tube and which has outflow openings, an ignitable gas-generating material inside the inner tube, filter elements in an annular space arranged between the inner tube and the outer tube, and an igniter unit for igniting the gas-generating material. In order to improve the damming and sealing of the outflow openings, there is arranged in the inner tube a rolled-up, self overlapping damming strip adjoining the wall at least partially. Also, the outflow openings are covered on the outside of the inner tube by a sealing strip having at least two mutually overlapping portions of differing widths.

Gas generator, especially for an airbag

A filter device for filtering a gas flow, especially for filtering the gases produced by a gas generator for an impact protection cushion, comprises a filter element exhibiting several filter material plies of varying permeability lying in series in the flow direction. The filter element is fashioned as a wrapped member produced by winding up a length of filter material. The length of filter material has sectionally different filter materials, preferably wire mesh of differing mesh widths and metal fiber mats. A wrapped member is formed by winding up this filter material web, the wrapping plies of which consist of different materials with varying filter effects. This filter element wrap is inserted, for example, in the annular interspace between the two tubes of a double-tube gas generator. Owing to the rising pressure of the gas to be cleaned, the wrapped member is compacted with the consequence that its filtering function is improved.

Filter device for filtering a gas flow

The gas generator has two tubes, coaxial to each other, with different diameters, between which there is formed an annular intermediate chamber. The inner tube is filled with gas-producing material in the form of pellets, which develops pressure gas when ignited, the gas emerges via openings in both tubes. Projecting into the inner tube there is an ignition device, which extends through the cylindrical walls of both tubes. The ignition device is held by a ring or tubular holding body, which is substantially shorter than both tubes and fills out the intermediate chamber between both tubes. Both tubes are provided with peripheral openings aligning with each other, and the holding body has an installation through-hole, into which the ignition device is positioned. The holding body has furthermore a slot. The ignition device is held in a reliable manner by means of the holding body.

Gas generator, in particular, a tubular gas generator for an air bag

A gas generator is provided with a housing which is open at two opposing end faces and a housing wall in which several gas orifices are arranged. The housing is formed as an extruded hollow profile of aluminum or an aluminum alloy. A combustion chamber is accommodated in the housing, in which combustion chamber gas-generating material which is ignitable by means of an ignition unit is accommodated. The combustion gases arising with the ignition of the gas-generating material are cleaned within the housing by filter elements and discharged by means of the gas orifices. The filter elements are supported by holding sections integral with the extruded hollow profile and are inserted by means of one of the open end faces of the extruded hollow profile. In the installed state the filter elements extend in a straight line between the holding sections associated therewith.

Gas generator for an air bag

A gas generator is provided with an outer tube and an inner tube arranged coaxially within the outer tube. The pressure gas-generating charge is accommodated in the inner tube, the charge being ignited by an ignition unit. The generator is closed at the ends in a gas tight manner by closure covers, which are surrounded laterally by the end sections of the outer tube. On the inside of the closure covers there is in each case a recess for accepting the ends of the inner tube. The recesses hold the inner tube centered in the outer tube. Each cover is further provided with a peripheral groove, in which interior projections, directed inwards, and formed by multiple notching by means of a notching tool, engage. These projections, for their part, are arranged on the inner peripheral surface of the outer tube in the end sections thereof.

Tubular gas generator for an inflatable impact cushion

Ring pellets for gas generators exhibit optimum reaction rates by having configurations which optimize such rates. The pellet has a central ignition duct; from the latter, outlet channels extend radially toward a rim of the pellet. Specific embodiments contain, on the topside and underside of the pellets, either conical recesses or annular channels or both. The pellets preferably exhibit a proportion of surface area/unit weight of from 4 to 7 cm.sup.2 /g, which can be set by variation of the channels and, respectively, of the recesses to obtain a desired value. The higher this value, the greater the reaction rate. The ring pellets are especially well suited for airbag generators which must display differently high reaction rates on the driver's side and on the front-seat passenger's side, and which are to exhibit at the same time a high breaking and abrasion stability.

An igniting medium incorporating a support member, the latter of which is passed through by electrical leads extending towards an ignition bridge. The support member is constructed as a shunt-capacitance which is connected to the electrical lead lines for the ignition bridge.

Electrical igniting medium

A gas generator for an air bag, which can be manufactured in an advantageous manner, has at least two tubular pressure tanks wherein materials that release gas are combusted. The pressure tanks are connected radially with a central member containing an igniter element. The gas-releasing material fills up a tubular interior extensively in the form of stackable molded elements adapted to fit within the pressure tank. In most cases, an adequate path for the ignition vapors is constituted by a central channel within each element, while in case of rod-shaped molded elements, such adequate path is represented by the 'natural' cavities; additionally, a free surface area should exist between the elements and may be provided by nubs and/or indentations on the lateral faces of these molded elements.

Gas generator for air bag

Two cylinder chambers are provided in a housing, each of these chambers containing a piston. Pins project, as piston rods, from the pistons in differing directions. A duct is located in a zone between the pistons. This duct is in communication with a compressed gas cartridge. Upon triggering of the compressed gas cartridge, the released gas moves the pistons apart so that the pins are moved simultaneously or in accordance with a predetermined sequence of operations.

Compressed gas-actuated mechanical power element

An impact sensitive ignition device with an amplifier charge including a housing having a bottom and side wall, the side wall having a shoulder. An igniter is disposed in the housing at the bottom thereof with an anvil positioned in the housing for cooperation with the igniter. The anvil has at least one aperture therethrough and is supported on the shoulder of the housing. A sleeve member is disposed above the anvil and has an open end with a flange thereat, the sleeve member being coupled to the housing at the flange thereof, and the amplifier charge is disposed in the sleeve member.

A compressed-gas-actuated switching device including a housing, at least one primer for generating compressed gas and an actuating element for actuating a device to be actuated in response to generated compressed gas. The switching device further includes a mechanical triggering arrangement in combination with at least one of an electrical and a thermal triggering arrangement for initiating the at least one primer element.

Compressed-gas-actuated switching device

A rotary power device for use in conjunction with tensioning mechanism of safety devices for the protection of passengers in vehicles and the like. The preferred embodiment disclosed is used for tensioning safety belts of a vehicle passenger restraint system in response to predetermined experienced deceleration such as occur in an accident situation. The rotary power device includes a rotary piston guided in a helically wound guide track such that the piston moves both rotatably and axially in response to compressed gas forces against a pressure face which extends in a plane containing the axis of rotation of the piston. A coupling bushing arrangement is interposed between the piston and the rotating shaft accommodating the safety belt, with axial movement of the piston with respect to the bushing and shaft, and with rotatable locking of the piston and shaft. In preferred embodiments, the rotary locking of the piston and the shaft is initiated only after the release of compressed gases causes an axial shifting of the bushing.
