Patients who have their cancer surgically removed are at risk for recurrence, even though currently free of disease. Lung cancer patients with higher activity of a nuclear excision repair gene called ERCC1 were at a lower risk for recurrence than patients with lower activity of ERCC1. Hence, it is possible to predict which patients are at a higher risk for recurrence after resection. This information can be used to design treatment strategies for patients determined to be at a higher risk for recurrence. Additionally, patients who are lower risk for recurrence can be saved the morbidity of further treatment.

Predictive value of nuclear excision repair genes for cancer survival

Methods are provided for predicting responsiveness of cancer cells to chemotherapy by measuring the level of phosphorylated Stat or the level of expression of Survivin in a cancer and comparing the level in the cancer cell to the respective level in a control. Also provided are methods of selecting a chemotherapeutic treatment for a subject diagnosed with cancer by measuring the level of phosphorylated Stat or the level of expression of Survivin in a cancer and comparing the level in the cancer cell to the respective level in a control. Kits for performing the methods are also provided. Methods for modulating Survivin-dependent apoptosis in a cancer cell are also disclosed.

Methods of predicting responsiveness to chemotherapeutic agents and selecting treatments

The present invention provides a method for detection of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at human chromosome segment 11p15.5 in a tumor sample from a patient with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and a method for prognosis of the patient's disease progression. The prognosis is useful for determining the course of treatment following surgical resection of tumor.
