Alkenylsuccinic acid half-amides of the formulae ##STR1## are used in water-containing and/or oil-containing formulations or metalworking liquids as anticorrosive agents and emulsifiers. In said formulae: A=C.sub.6 -C.sub.30 alkenyl, R=H or R.sup.1, R.sup.1 =--R.sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2 CHR.sup.3 --O).sub.n H, R.sup.2 =C.sub.1 -C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkylene, R.sup.3 =--H or --CH.sub.3, n=0 to 50 and Me.sup..sym. is an alkali metal ion, a proton or an ammonium ion of the formula HN.sup..sym. R.sup.4 R.sup.5 R.sup.6, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, which are identical or different, being hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl or Me.sup..sym. is a mixture of an alkali metal ion and an ammonium ion of the above-mentioned formula.

According to the invention, the alkoxylation of compounds containing active hydrogen atoms is carried out in the presence of specific alkaline earth metal salts of alkylor alkenylsuccinic monoesters as catalyst. The alkoxylates obtained have a narrow homolog distribution and a good appearance.

The ampholytes are extracted from the reaction solution with a liquid cation exchanger which is immiscible with the acidic aqueous reaction solution, where the cation exchanger is dissolved in at least one organic solvent which is immiscible with water and forms an organic phase with the organic solvent. Subsequently the organic phase which is loaded with the ampholyte is separated from the reaction solution, and then the ampholytes are back-extracted from the organic phase with aqueous solvents. The product losses in the process are low, and the residual salt content is very low.
