A battery system for an electric vehicle includes: a plurality of battery cells, each of the battery cells including electrode terminals; a busbar interconnecting the battery cells by contacting the electrode terminals; a battery housing enclosing the battery cells; and an electrically and thermally insulating cover element. The cover element covers the electrode terminals and the busbar such that the electrode terminals and the busbar are shielded from venting products exiting one or more of the battery cells towards the battery housing during a thermal runaway.

Battery system and vehicle including the battery system

A battery system includes: a plurality of battery cells, each of the battery cells having a venting side including a venting exit configured to allow venting products to exit the battery cells during a thermal runaway and a cooling side opposite the venting side; a cooling plate, the cooling side of the battery cells being in thermal connection with a first side of the cooling plate; and a battery housing enclosing the battery cells in a cell chamber. A guiding channel is formed between a second side of the cooling plate opposite the first side and a channel wall of the battery housing facing the second side of the cooling plate, and a passage fluidly connects the cell chamber and the guiding channel. Thus, when the venting products are emitted by the battery cells from the venting side into the cell chamber, the venting products are directed along a venting path from the cell chamber through the passage into the guiding channel and through the guiding channel to an environment of the battery system via a system exit.

A control system for a battery system is provided. The control system includes a master controller and a slave controller using light-based communication. The master controller includes a light source and a transmission controller controlling the light source, and the slave controller includes a photo-sensitive element, a wake-up circuit, a power supply node, and a receiver circuit. The photo-sensitive element receives the light signals emitted by the light source and, in response to receiving a wake-up light signal, outputs a wake-up signal to the wake-up circuit, and in response to receiving the wake-up signal from the photo-sensitive element, the wake-up circuit connects the receiver circuit to the power supply node or to the photo-sensitive element. When the receiver circuit is connected to the power supply node and the photo-sensitive element, the receiver circuit receives an operation voltage from the power supply node and receives reception signals from the photo-sensitive element.

Control system for a battery system

A battery system includes: a plurality of battery modules including a plurality of battery cells, wherein each battery module comprises a battery module monitor configured to monitor a state of the battery cells; a battery system monitor; and an optical communication system configured to connect the battery module monitors with the battery system monitor over at least two communication paths, wherein the optical communication system is configured to use at least two different wavelengths of light to differentiate between the communication paths.

System and method for communication between modules of a battery system

A battery system includes a plurality of battery modules, each of the battery modules including a plurality of stacked battery cells and a battery module monitor (BMM) configured to monitor the respective battery cells; a battery system monitor (BSM) configured to communicate with and control the BMMs; a housing enclosing the battery modules and the BSM, the battery modules being arranged in the housing such that a swelling compensation channel is formed between the battery module and the housing; and an optical communication system (OCS) configured to connect the BSM with the BMMs via optical signals propagating along the swelling compensation channel.
