Modified cyclopentadiene resins comprising essentially a) 20 to 80% by weight of cyclopentadiene compounds, b) 1 to 40% by weight of natural resin acids and c) 31 to 70% by weight of phenol resins. These compounds are suitable as binder resins for printing inks. They are distinguished by excellent compatibility with aromatics-free mineral oils and with vegetable oils.

Modified cyclopentadiene resin

Cyclopentadiene-modified alkyd resins obtained by reaction of naturally occurring, unsaturated fatty acid esters with cyclopentadiene compounds under pressure, transesterification of the resulting adducts with polyols which contain at least three hydroxyl groups, and esterification with aromatic or cycloaliphatic polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof. These resins are employed in the preparation of printing inks for offset printing. The novel resins impart an improved gloss to these printing inks.

Cyclopentadiene-modified alkyd resins

A modified cyclopentadiene resin which comprises (a) 40 to 90% by weight of units of monomeric or oligomeric cyclopentadiene and/or its alkyl-substitution products, (b) 1 to 30% by weight of resols, (c) 5 to 40% by weight of non-aromatic, unsaturated monocarboxylic acids having 8 to 26 carbon atoms, (d) 0 to 10% by weight of .alpha.,.beta.-olefinic, unsaturated dicarboxylic acid units, (e) 0 to 20% by weight of other copolymerizable monomers and/or (f) 0 to 3% by weight of a metal compound from the groups IIa, IIb or IIIa of the periodic system, the sum of the components (a) to (f) always being 100% by weight, a single-stage process for its preparation, and the use of the modified cyclopentadiene resins as binders for printing inks, particularly for gravure inks.

Process for preparing printing ink binders based on reaction products of (a) natural resins, (b) other synthetic resins, (c) .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid units and (d) calcium compounds and, if appropriate, other compounds of metals of group II of the periodic system. The compounds (a) to (c) are reacted to give a product having an acid number of 75 to 150, which is then reacted with metal compounds in such a way that the acid number is reduced by at least one third. Unreacted metal compounds present in the resulting reaction product are then converted by means of acetic acid, via acetates, into salts of the resins. C., selected from the group consisting of alkylaromatic hydrocarbons and tetrahydronaphthalene, said polymers having a mean molecular weight of from 300 to 5000, an iodine number (measured according to DIN Standard 53241, part 2) of from 0 to 60, and a melting point in the range of from 30.degree. to 150.degree.
