An IFF system comprises an interrogation device having an antenna arrangement operating in the HF or microwave range with a relatively broad radiation characteristic for radiation of coded interrogation pulses and for receiving answer signals. The IFF system cooperates with a position finding device whose transmission pulses are radiated by way of a relatively narrow radiation lobe and wherein the answer signals are triggered in the answering device in response to the arrival of transmission pulses of the position finding device. A pulse laser operating in the optical range and having a very narrow radiation lobe at the transmission radiator is used as the position finding device and an answer signal is only triggered in the answering device with the aid of a control circuit when the transmission pulse of the laser transmitter arrives in a certain section during the interrogation pulse produced by the interrogation transmitter, the duration of the interrogation pulses being essentially greater than the duration of the transmission pulses.

IFF system cooperating with further position finding device

A method of accurate friend-foe recognition on the basis of secondary radar through the provision additional special information in both the interrogation device and the responsor device during the formation of their respective signals. This additional information is solely practical and valid for the respective responsor device undergoing interrogation so that the answering signals provided are valued as answers coming from a friend-responsor device. Additional steps of utilizing the time position of the additional information and the uniqueness of such information with respect to a simultaneously available great number of responses makes it still more difficult for a foe-responsor to pass itself off as a counterfeit friend-responsor.

Interrogator-responsor system for secondary radar devices

An airport-surveillance system for determining the position and identification of aircraft (4) on the airfield which utilizes secondary radar and includes an interrogation station (1) installed on the airfield (3) and from which the interrogation signal is transmitted by way of a narrow sharply forcused beam of an antenna which scans the airfield and further includes transponding stations installed in the aircraft (4). The present invention provides accurate identification and location of the aircraft by utilizing a receiver which has a sharply focused antenna beam and which is geographically located a distance away from the interrogation antenna and wherein the replies from the transponder of the aircraft are received by the receiving antenna only when the interrogation and receiving antenna beams (2, 22) intersect. By scanning all locations of the airport, the position and identification of all aircraft on the airport can be determined. A modification of the invention provides that instead of or in addition to the receiving station having a narrow beam antenna a number of receivers (5, 6 and 7) having omni-directional receiving antennas can be mounted at different locations on the airfield for determining the aircraft positions by using hyperbola locating techniques. The airport surveillance system of the invention is particularly suitable for large airports.

Identification -- friend or foe systems which utilize computer control continuously changing interrogation signals and responding signals have been developed. The signals are varied in a time dependent manner, however, it is possible that an intruder might intercept a proper responding signal and repeat the code of this responding signal, and thus confuse the interrogating station. The present system allows a responding signal to be used only once during a particular time interval so that an interrogating station will know that if an otherwise proper responding signal is received twice during a time interval, that the second signal is spurious.
