Coating compositions stabilized against damage by light, heat and oxygen

This invention relates to a process for the preparation of UV protective coatings by plasma-enhanced vacuum deposition, using hydroxyphenyl-s-triazines as UV absorbers. This invention also relates to the use of hydroxyphenyl-s-triazines in plasma-enhanced vacuum depositions and to the substrates coated by this process.

Stabilizer combination

The invention relates to compounds of the formula I ##STR1## in which n is 1 or 2, A is CH or a nitrogen atom, and the other radicals R.sup.1 to R.sup.25 are as defined in claim 1. The compounds of the formula I can advantageously be employed for stabilizing organic material against the harmful effect of light, oxygen and/or heat.

Latent light stabilizers

The invention relates to a photographic recording material comprising, on a base, at least one silver-halide emulsion layer and, if desired, at least one interlayer and/or a protection layer, where at least one of said layers contains a UV absorber of the 2-hydroxyphenyltriazine type, as described in greater detail in claim 1; this UV absorber can also be in the form of a homopolymer or copolymer.

ABS copolymers and similar styrene or .alpha.-methylstyrene copolymers which contain an elastomer phase are stabilized against light-induced degradation by a) incorporation of a copolymerizable sterically hindered amine in, and b) addition of a non-copolymerizable sterically hindered amine to, the copolymer. Preferred sterically hindered amines are polyalkylpiperidines.

Copolymers of styrene or a-methylstyrene and at least one comonomer, containing crosslinked elastomer particles, can be light-stabilized by modifying the elastomer particles by copolymerization with a suitable derivative of a sterically hindered amine. The modification is preferably carried out by graft polymerization, the elastomer used preferably being polybutadiene.

Compounds which contain at least one group of the formula I ##STR1## in which X is a group which completes the ring to form a piperidine ring, are effective stabilizers for organic materials against damage by light, oxygen and heat.

Tetramethylpiperidino-s-triazines

Compounds of formula I ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, methyl or cyano, and R' is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl or phenyl, are suitable for copolymerization with ethylenically unsaturated monomers to form crosslinked copolymers which are stabilized against light.
