Compositions are provided for the topical treatment of cancer consisting of lotions, creams, sprays, suppositories or slow-release transdermal patches containing lipid-soluble, skin-penetrating organic selenium compounds in combination with inert carriers in therapeutically effective amounts of selenium compound. The selenium compounds are medium linear chain dialkyl diselenides and precursors such as alkyl selenols. Preferred compositions employ R&#x2014;Se&#x2014;Se&#x2014;R compounds where R is from 6 to 8 carbon atoms, and most specifically di-n-hexyl diselenide. Commonly used carriers may be purified hydrocarbon fractions, oils, with or without added fat-soluble vitamins, water and emulsifying agents.

Compositions for the treatment and prevention of cancer

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for determining the concentration of CO gas in a fuel reformate stream such as in a PEM fuel cell vehicle. This invention protects the fuel cell catalyst by controlling the reformate stream system to minimize the CO and reduce it by a novel catalyst system that selectively converts CO to methane but does not react with carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The catalyst may reduce the CO to methane by reaction with hydrogen. The preferred embodiment both monitors the CO by a thermal differential sensing means and an optical biomimetic sensor and or a conductivity sensor. These sensors respond to the CO gas and are monitored by one or more monitoring sensors such as the temperature and or conductivity difference between the control and the catalytic material such as nickel and in the biomimetic sensor an optical change is monitored. The optical sensing comprising a photon source optically coupled to the sensor and photodiode system, so that the photon flux is a function of at least one other sensor's response to the CO gas, e.g., transmits light through the sensor to the photodiode. The photocurrent from the photodiode is converted to a digital sensor reading value proportional to the optical characteristic(s) of the sensor(s) as a function of time and the data is loaded into a microprocessor or other logic circuit. In the microprocessor, the sensor readings are essentially used to calculate the CO concentration and control the process to maximize the fuel cell or to trigger a signal for service.

Carbon monoxide detection and purification system for fuels cells

The straight-chain terminal olefinic hydrocarbon n-decene-1 and compositions containing n-decene-1 are effective in the treatment of minor localized skin infections, inflammatory skin conditions and soreness when applied topically to the skin. Typically, the product comprises from about 5 to 100 volume percent of pure n-decene-1. However, mixtures of n-decene-1 with inert solvents or fillers for use in lotions, creams, gels and sprays can also be used.

Product for treatment of acne and other skin conditions

A composition comprising squalene and saturated normal aliphatic hydrocarbons which is very effective in the treatment of acne, minor skin irritations and minor skin wounds, burns, inflammation and soreness when applied topically to the skin. Basically, the product comprises from about 5 to 40 volume percent squalene and from about 5 to 25 volume percent n-decane, n-dodecane or mixtures thereof with the balance being normal aliphatic hydrocarbons with chain lengths in the C10 to C35 range or a water-polysorbate emulsion. If desired, certain other ingredients such as zinc oxide or a filler may be added to the mixture. The product may be applied as a spray, cream or gel.
