A technique is provided for transmitting client data included in a client signal via an optical transmission path of an optical transport network. The optical transport network uses transport frames include a transport frame period for transmitting client data. The method includes receiving multiple client entities comprising multiple client data bits; determining the number of client data entities received during a transport frame period to establish a mean number of client data entities to be included in a transport frame, the mean number of client data entities corresponding to a mean number of client data bits; mapping multiple client data entities into the transport frame wherein mapping comprises alternately adding and subtracting an amount of client data bits to/from the mean number of client data bits for at least two consecutive transport frames; and transmitting the transport frames comprising the client data via the optical transport network.

Transmission method

An exemplary method and apparatus are provided for transmitting an asynchronous transport signal over an optical fiber section of an Optical Transport Network. Higher order Optical Data Units of an asynchronous transport signal to be transmitted may be encapsulated into outer transport frames that offer a payload rate higher than a nominal bit rate of the asynchronous transport signal. An output optical signal, which contains the outer transport frames with the encapsulated asynchronous transport signal, is generated at a locally generated clock rate and transmitted over an optical fiber section. To encapsulate the asynchronous transport signal, its bit rate is adapted to the payload rate of the outer transport frames, which is derived from the locally generated clock through a justification and stuffing process. The rate adapted transport signal is then synchronously mapped into the outer transport frames at the rate of the locally generated clock.

Method and apparatus for transmitting an asynchronous transport signal over an optical section

An exemplary apparatus is provided for a high capacity switching system for use in a transport network, which contains a number of input and output subsystems and a central interconnection means configurably interconnecting the input and output subsystems. The subsystems have input and output line modules for receiving and transmitting data signals to and from transmission lines of the network, one or more link modules connecting the subsystems to the interconnection means, and local switching means switching data signals in time and space domain between the input and output modules and the one or more link modules within one subsystems. The link modules are adapted to aggregate data signals from different input and output line modules of the same input and output subsystems and destined to input and output line modules of another one of the input and output subsystems into signal bursts and add a payload gap to each signal burst.

High capacity switching system

The semiconductor optical amplifier device includes a plurality of active units. Each active unit includes an active stripe structure of an optical amplifying medium and a current circuit configured to inject current into the corresponding active stripe structure. Each active stripe structure extends from an input end to an output end. An optical splitter device is configured to split an incoming signal light and for distributing corresponding parts of the incoming signal light into the different input ends of the active stripe structures. The optical splitter device is configured to supply each active stripe structure with the same signals.

Semiconductor optical amplifier device and optical matrix switch

The present invention includes method and apparatus for storing provisioned information within the optical switches and retrievable by every controller. The optical switches perform failure isolation according to their provisioning information. The optical switches monitor each channel for loss of signal. The provisioning information is shared autonomously between the optical switches allowing the switches to retrieve the provisioning information of the network topology from any other optical switch in the network. Fault isolation is done by the optical switch on the level of optical switch provisioning following the paradigm of 'single alarm for single fault,' thus avoiding alarm floods and ambiguous alarms, thereby saving the operator time and money.

The invention includes a method and apparatus for synchronously switching at least one plesiochronous signal within a network element. Specifically, a method according to one embodiment of the invention includes receiving the at least one plesiochronous signal, and mapping the at least one plesiochronous signal into at least one synchronous signal. The at least one synchronous signal includes at least one virtually-concatenated signal, where each of the at least one virtually-concatenated signal includes a plurality of sub-signals, and each of the sub-signals is adapted for being synchronously switched within the network element.
