In an articulated fitting for vehicle seats, particularly motor vehicle seats, having an upper fitting element (4) to be connected with the back rest, a lower fitting element (3) to be connected with the seat portion, an intermediate element (5), which is pivotably connected both with the upper fitting element and with the lower fitting element about a hinged axis (6) and a lower-lying folding axis (13), respectively, and having an adjusting and holding device that engages the upper fitting element (4) and the intermediate element (5) for the adjustment of the angle of inclination of the back rest and the folding lock (14,17,18,20) which permits a pivoting of the upper fitting element (4) and the intermediate element (5) about the folding axis (13) only when in the opened condition, the connecting line between the pivot axis (6) and the folding axis (13) when the folding lock is closed, encompasses an angle of at most 30.degree. with a line extending vertically downward from the pivot axis (5) in the assembled position.

The adjustable hinge mount for motor vehicle seats having a reclinable seat back comprises means for holding respective hinge members of the mount in a fixed axial position. The holding means comprises a bearing shield supported for rotation on the rotary axle interconnecting the two hinge members. The rim portions of the shield above the rotary axle and on the level of the latter are connected to the outer hinge member assigned to the seat back in such a manner that substantially no axial play takes place. The lower range of the outer hinge member is secured against axial play by means of a Z-shaped guiding plate integrally connected to the hinge member assigned to the seat proper.

A seat has a seat element and a back element which is to be tiltable forwardly and rearwardly relative to the seat element. Two hinges are provided at the opposite sides of the seat and each includes a first hinge member on the seat element and a cooperating second hinge member on the back element. Each hinge has an arrangement which connects the first and second hinge members thereof for relative pivoting and which includes a first gear turnable with one of the hinge members and a second gear turnable with the other hinge member, the two gears having cooperating annuli of gear teeth which mesh with one another. One of the gears can be disengaged from its associated hinge member so that the latter can turn freely relative to this gear. The arrangement for this purpose includes a first abutment system which normally connects the gear to the associated hinge member, and a second abutment system which also normally connects the gear to the associated hinge member. One operating arrangement permits the first abutment system to be disengaged so as to permit the associated hinge member and hence the back element to pivot forwardly and another operating device permits the second abutment system to be disengaged to permit rearward tilting of the back element.
