The present invention relates to a continuous process for producing polymers at conversions ranging from 50% to 95% having a Mooney viscosity of at least 25 Mooney-units and a gel content of less than 15 wt. % containing repeating units derived from at least one isoolefin monomer, more than 4.1 mol % of repeating units derived from at least one multiolefin monomer and optionally further copolymerizable monomers in the presence of AlCland a suitable proton source (e.g. water) or cationogen and at least one multiolefin cross-linking agent wherein the process is conducted in the absence of transition metal compounds and organic nitro compounds.

The present invention relates to a process for producing polymers comprising repeating units derived from at least one isoolefin monomer, at least one multiolefin monomer and optionally further copolymerization monomers in the presence of at least one organic nitro compound and AlCl/water wherein the process is conducted in the absence of compounds selected from the group consisting of vanadium compounds, zirconium halogenid, and hafnium hallogenides.

Highly branched polyisoolefines are produced according to the invention by the polymerization of isoolefines in a single-stage process, in solution, suspension or in the gas phase in the presence of bifunctional monomers which contain at least one group capable of cationic polymerization and at least one group which serves as an initiator for the cationic polymerization of isoolefines (inimer), at temperatures from +20 to -100.degree. C., optionally in the presence of inert, organic solvents, and in the presence of alkylalumoxanes (coinitiator).

Polyisoolefins are produced using the process according to the invention by polymerising isoolefins, optionally with conjugated or unconjugated dienes and/or cationically polymerisable, mono- or polyunsaturated compounds in solution, in suspension or in the gas phase at temperatures of -100.degree. C. to +200.degree. C. and pressures of 0.1 to 100 bar in the presence of an initiator system consisting of aluminium-cyclopentadienyl compounds and boron compounds.

Polyisoolefins are produced according to the invention by polymerizing isoolefins having 4 to 16 carbon atoms, optionally with conjugated diolefins having 4 to 6 carbon atoms and/or cationically polymerizable, mono- or polyunsaturated, organic compounds having 4 to 16 carbon atoms in the presence of mixtures of carbon dioxide and linear, branched and/or cyclic C.sub.4 -C.sub.8 alkanes and in the presence of catalysts at temperatures of -70.degree. C. to +20.degree. C. and pressures of 1 to 70 bar, wherein the weight ratio of carbon dioxide to alkanes is 10:90 to 90:10. The process according to the invention largely prevents the formation of fouling on the reactor walls, so ensuring better removal of heat. Moreover, in accordance with the process according to the invention, the polyisoolefins obtained may be directly chemically modified once the carbon dioxide has been removed.

The production of C.sub.4 -C.sub.16 alkyl rubbers using the slurry process by copolymerisation of isoolefins having 4 to 16 carbon atoms with conjugated diolefins having 4 to 6 carbon atoms and/or cationically polymerisable, mono- or polyunsaturated organic compounds having 4 to 16 carbon atoms in the presence of methyl chloride and in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalysts proceeds particularly advantageously by performing copolymerisation in the presence of linear, branched and/or cyclic alkanes.
