Disclosed are improved carbon blacks and a process for producing them. The improved carbon blacks are distinguished from conventional blacks having the same CTAB surface, after incorporation into SSBR/BR rubber compositions, by a lower rolling resistance with equal or better wet skid behavior. They can be produced in conventional carbon black reactors by conducting the burning in the combustion chamber so that carbon nuclei form and are immediately brought into contact with the carbon black raw material.

A process for the production of furnace blacks of variable carbon black structure according to the customary furnace black technology is disclosed, whereby a low ratio is adjusted between combustion air and carbon black raw material for achieving high yields and large raw material through-puts, and wherein for lowering of the carbon black structure the carbon black produced is removed entirely or partly from the exhaust gases and the residual gas thus obtained is completely or partially recycled to the combustion chamber of the reactor.

The resorcinol preferably either has an average particle size of 0.01 to 0.4 mm or is broken down to that size. A process for removing extractables from carbon blacks in a fluidized bed, wherein low extractable carbon blacks are treated under relatively mild temperature conditions (320.degree. C.) with an oxygen containing gas and high extractable carbon blacks are treated first at 100.degree.-320.degree. C. with steam and then at 200.degree.-500.degree. C. with an oxygen containing gas. Beaded carbon black is disclosed with a water content of 30 to 80% by weight which are used for coloring of paper and concrete. The product has the advantage of dust-free handling and a higher jet black color compared to conventional carbon black powder.
