A printing and/or varnishing machine having a plurality of sheet-guiding cylinders in which at least one of the cylinders has an outer detachable packing which has enhanced ink repellent characteristics and which significantly reduces wear. The packing has a layered structure which includes a flexible backing material, the underside of which is assigned to the base body of the sheet-guiding cylinder, a coatingof molybdenum or tungsten carbide/cobalt which is adhesively applied to the upper side of the backing material, and a sealing layerof a material made from the group of polysiloxanes which is adhesively applied to the upper side of the coating. The side of the packingswhich faces the material to be printed has a surface profile consisting of coneswith rounded tipsfor reduced sheet contact.

A wear-resistant, ink-repellent coating, for printing-press components, and in particular, web-fed printing presses. In order to provide a seal for this low-wear coating which results in a permanent ink-repellent surface quality and which additionally has a high resistance to standard cleaning agents used in printing technology, the printing-press component which is to be protected is first provided with oxide ceramic or hard metal layer. This layer may be applied by thermal spraying. In addition, the component is treated with a polyorganosiloxane sealant, particularly polyhydridomethylsiloxane, including the necessary heat-curing at moderate temperatures of from 100&deg; C. to 170&deg; C. so as to prevent ink deposition. The sealing may also take place after the wear-resistant layer has undergone a grinding and polishing treatment.

Dampening-unit roller for a dampening unit of a printing machine includes a roller body having an outer cylindrical surface, and a coating on the outer cylindrical surface, the coating including or consisting of an oxide of zirconium and/or an oxide of yttrium.

A printing machine roller, especially an ink roller, and preferably an ink distributor roller, with a coating of the entire outer cylindrical surface. The coating consists of a support matrix of a good heat-conducting and low-wear metal, e.g., nickel or aluminum-silicon alloy and graphite or plastic particles, e.g., of polyester, inlaid into the metal matrix. The coating is produced by thermal spraying, preferably plasma spraying or flame spraying. The residual porosity of the coating can be varied within wide limits based on process requirements. This residual porosity also permits the ink-friendliness to be varied within wide limits via sealing with an ink-friendly plastic. The roughness of such layers can be adjusted virtually as desired to the individual requirements of the offset process.

The hydrophilic properties of a printing-machine roller are adjusted with a coating applied on an outer surface of its cylindrical body. The coating contains at least 45% by weight of pure silicon, or it is formed exclusively of chemically pure silicon. The coating is between 0.2 and 2 mm thick and its surface roughness R.sub.z is no more than 5 .mu.m.

In a powder recharging apparatus for a low-pressure plasma spraying system having a powder magazine with a fill pipe (22) at its bottom and a powder feeder (32) cooperating with the magazine (23) and connected by a hose or pipe to the vacuum chamber, a valve pair (19, 20) is inserted into the fill pipe (22) and is connected by a tee coupling (21) both to a valved vacuum pipe (25) and to an additional connecting pipe or flange (30), this flange (30) being joined by a releasable pipe coupling, such as a pipe union (18) for example, to the flange (29) of a funnel neck (10) of a supply funnel (9), a second valve pair (15, 16) being inserted between this flange (29) and the outlet connection (10). To refill it with powder, the upper assembly (A) of the system can be separated from the lower assembly (B) and then can be filled in a chamber flooded with noble gas after opening the valve pair ( 15, 16), and then, after it is reconnected to the assembly (B) with the valves closed, it is again in a position permitting the transfer of the powder from the supply funnel (9) into the supply magazine (23) of the powder feeder (32).
