An electrode arrangement is provided having at least one electrode for insertion into a human or animal body for electrothermal treatment of the body. The electrode is situated on an electrode support and is connected to an alternating current source via a supply lead and to a temperature stabilizer device for influencing the effective temperature profile in a treatment area. The electrode support and the electrode, or electrodes, are constructed for direct insertion into body tissue, said insertion being channel forming. The temperature stabilizer device has a timed heating device.

Applicator device for laser radiation wherein the end of the radiation conducting light-wave conductor faces toward the object to be treated and is mounted in a tube-like sleeve which is closed and transparent at the end for the laser radiation. The end of the sleeve and/or the end of the light-wave conductor are provided with a scattering device which includes a scattering volume. For this purpose, the application of the scattering medium can be adapted to the particular requirement.

A contact applicator arrangement for applying laser radiation to an object is disclosed. The contact applicator arrangement includes: a holder having an outer surface and defining a longitudinal axis; the holder having an outlet formed in the outer surface for passing the radiation from the holder to the object; a radiation guide mounted in the holder for guiding the radiation through the outlet; and, an element displaceably mounted in the holder so as to be movable along the longitudinal axis in response to a contact pressure applied on the element. The element is movable to a first position wherein the element extends outwardly beyond the surface of the holder and to a second position rearward of the first position. These first and second positions define a displacement range of the element. A spring resiliently biases the element in opposition to the contact pressure to define a pregiven force within the displacement range of the element. A laser radiation supply supplies radiation to the radiation guide and a switching circuit switches the radiation supply on when the element is moved back to the first position and remains on within the displacement range and switches the radiation supply off when the element reaches the second position and leaves the displacement range.

A catheter for vascular surgery includes a circular array of optical fibers therein disposed at the distal end of the catheter with each lightguide being separated by an elastically deformable member with compartments therein for receiving pressurized fluid. Upon pressurizing the compartments the diameter of the catheter expands. The optical fibers are bunched at the end of the catheter proximate the source of laser light where shutters are positioned for selecting only those lightguides at the distal end which are needed to remove blockages. By pressurizing selected elastically expandable members, groups of optical fibers can be isolated from the rest of the optical fibers and deflected toward the wall of the vessel in which the catheter is being used.

To protect the launch surfaces of laser catheters fed with short-pulsed laser radiation, the individual optical fibers are placed on the launch side in hexagonally closest packing. Ablation-resistant materials are applied to the outer circumference of the cross-section area adjacent to the launch device, and the individual fibers and the ablation-resistant materials are connected to one another by material or friction connections. The ablation-resistant materials are of the same material, silicate, or PTFE, as the optical fibers.

Process and device for protecting the proximal launch sides of laser

Surgical procedures on biological tissue are carried out with the aid of a laser with substances being applied to the tissue before or during the treatment and these substances are absorbent in the range of the wavelength of the laser beam. A surgical manipulator can be provided and equipped with suction and irrigation channels and the substances can be directed to one of these channels via a metering unit. The application of substances such as sulfisomidine or sulfacetamide increases the ablation rate and reduces the threshold of the ablation process. At the same time, sensitive structures are protected from the damaging effects of the laser radiation as well as from the stray radiation and fluorescence radiation triggered by the laser radiation during the application of microsurgery to the eye.
