The invention relates to vaccine preparations, pharmaceutical preparations and methods for inducing protective immunity in humans using a live, attenuated yellow fever virus of strain D17 preferably administered by an intranasal route of administration. The inventors have also developed an assay for detecting the induction of both the binding and neutralizing antibodies formed in a protective immune response in humans who have received an intranasal vaccine preparation of the kind described.

The invention concerns new virus-like particles composed of the VP1 protein of the JC virus, a process for their production and their use in analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

A method of treating viral diseases in a human subject is disclosed. The method involves applying effective amounts of the compound: ##STR1## wherein X is an azido group, a methoxy radical or a fluorine atom and B is thymine, uracil, guanine, cytosine, purine or hypoxanthine if X is methoxy or fluorine, and B is guanine, purine or hypoxanthine if X is azido or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Also disclosed are compositions and compounds useful in the method.
