Opticalls active enantiomers of the formula I ##STR1## where R is a group of the formulae ##STR2## R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, among others, are halogen or CF.sub.3 and Z is a carboxyl, carboxylate, carboxylic acid ester, thioester, carbonamide, carboxylic acid anilide, carbohydrazide or thioamide group, are interesting herbicides the effect of which is considerably superior to that of the optically inactive racemates.

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## exhibit, in the pre-emergence process and in the post-emergence process, a good herbicidal action against a number of dicotyledonous weeds, they are well tolerated in monocotyledonous crops, such as wheat, barley, rice, sorghum and maize, and are also selectively active in some dicotyledonous crops such as soy beans, groundnuts and the like.

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents hydroxyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.10)alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkylthio, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)alkenyloxy, cyclohexyloxy, cyclopentyloxy, phenoxy or phenylthio both optionally substituted once or twice with halogen, benzyloxy, benzylthio or -O-cat in which 'cat' stands for the cation of an inorganic or organic base, have a very good effect on wild oat, barnyard grass, bristle grass and rayegrass in a much lower concentration than known analogous compounds.

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## where R.sub.1 is H or Hal and R.sub.2 is a variety of functional groups among which is hydroxy, alkoxy and (substituted) amino, are valuable grass herbicides.

Herbicidal compositions

Herbicidal agents containing as active ingredient a compound of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -halogeno-alkyl, NO.sub.2 SO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, --COOCH.sub.3, CN, with the proviso that R.sub.2 cannot be alkoxy when (R).sub.n is alkyl, R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, R.sub.2 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, CH.sub.2 Cl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy, X is oxygen or sulfur and n is an integer of from 1 to 3 are especially useful for combatting annual weed grasses in dicotyledonous and even monocotyledonous crop plants.

Phenoxyphenoxy-propionic acid derivatives of the formula ##STR1## exhibit an outstanding herbicidal activity against a wide variety of weed grasses and are well tolerated by dicotyledonous crop plants and various cereals.

Phenoxyphenoxy-propionic acid derivatives

Phenoxy-phenoxypropionic acid derivatives of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or halogen, and R.sub.1 is substituted alkyl, cyclohexenyl, phenylalkenyl or (substituted) alkinyl, are interesting selective herbicides having a special activity against weed grasses. They are obtained for example by reaction of corresponding phenoxypropionic acid halides with hydroxy compounds of the formula HO--R.sub.1.

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -haloalkyl, No.sub.2, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -thioalkyl or OCH.sub.3, R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, X is oxygen or sulfur and n is a whole number in the range of from 1 to 3 exhibit good insecticidal, acaricidal and nematodicidal properties.

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy, NO.sub.2 or S-CH.sub.3, R.sub.1 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, R.sub.2 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkylamino, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -alkenylamino, N,N-di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkylamino), C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkylamino or a saturated N-heterocycle having from 4 to 8 C-atoms altogether of which 1 or 2 may stand in the side chain and in which one CH.sub.2 group of the cycle may be replaced by oxygen or sulfur, R.sub.3 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, X is oxygen or sulfur and n is zero or a whole number in the range of from 1 to 3 exhibit a good herbicidal effect on some economically important weed grasses and dicotyledonous weeds and simultaneously they have excellent insecticidal and acaricidal properties.
