A surgical microscope () has a viewing optic () which allows a viewing person to view the enlarged display of an object region () in a viewing area (). The viewing optic () has a continuously adjustable magnification system () with which a viewing optic adjusting unit () is associated. The surgical microscope () has an adjustable illuminating system (), which provides illuminating light () for the object region (), to illuminate the object region in an illuminated area () using illuminating light () of adjustable radiation intensity. An illumination system control unit () is provided in the surgical microscope (), the control unit being connected to the viewing optic adjusting unit () for receiving information as to the adjusted magnification of the viewing optic ().

Before the exposure of a film, the brightness of the miscroscope image is determined with a sensor by multiple constant (.tau.) which characterizes the dependence of the microscope image with time is determined. The film is subsequently exposed for a single exposure time (D.sub.c) which takes into account the dependence with time of the microscope image. The process is particularly suitable for microphotography of fluorescence pictures with fluorescence which bleaches out (fading). By the display of both the time constant (.tau.) and also the required exposure time, it can be estimated in advance, before exposure of the film, whether the dependence of the fluorescence on time permits microphotography with a sufficient exposure of the film, in the microscope conditions which have been set. A multiple exposure of the film is not required. A photodiode is provided for exposure measurement, and its photocurrent is integrated over time, the integration time being varied in dependence on the exposure measurement signal.

A photomicroscope includes a port for a still camera (11) and an additional video camera (14). The video image of the video camera (14) serves both for the operation of a passive autofocusing system (23, 24) and for the determination of the exposure time for the still camera (11). The image areas that are used for exposure metering can be selected via a control panel (27). The integration time of the video camera (14) can be varied up to the range of minutes. The selected image areas are superimposed on the object image.
