A heater (independent vehicle heater) which can be operated in a particularly wide range between full load and partial load, e.g., 1:10 to 1:15, is shown. This is achieved by the annular space surrounding the combustion chamber being divided into two partial compartments and by supplying the combustion air to these partial compartments. A control element (back-pressure-controlled control element), which separates some of the air passage openings between the annular space and the combustion chamber from the passage of air, is arranged in the combustion air line.

Liquid fuel-operated heater for vehicles

In space heaters with pressure atomization burners, which have a small combustion chamber volume, good mixing of air with fuel is achieved practically only in the case of relatively high air flow velocities, which leads, however, to difficulties in terms of ignition, especially at high operating voltages and low temperatures. The blower motor is therefore started first when putting the heater into operation, after which it is disconnected from the power source, so that the speed will again decrease, after which the high-voltage ignition and the fuel supply are turned on, so that the ignition can take place at reduced blower speed, and the high-voltage ignition is turned off and the blower motor is restarted after the flame has been recognized in the burner.

Heater for mobile units

An arrangement for the retention of an ultrasonic atomizer has the advantage of little influence on the vibration system due to the fuel supply connections and reduced bearing surface of the ultrasonic atomizer. The construction permits quick installation through since the retention is effected with a clamp. The fuel supply occurs via a bore opening into an annular channel in the structural part in which the ultrasonic atomizer is mounted. The atomizer is retained by a small bearing surface. A radial bore in a lug of the ultrasonic atomizer is a component part of the horn of the atomizer.

Liquid fuel ultrasonic atomizer construction for a heater

An ultrasonic atomizing burner for smaller heating apparatus particularly for mobile spaces, such as motor vehicles comprises an atomizer which has a fuel inlet and which is equipped with an atomizer discharge plate and a structure skirting the plate which defines a combustion air flow space for 1% at most of the combustion air amount. This structure includes a cylindrical combustion chamber having a forward discharge end with a flame baffle and with a heating gas outlet tube connected to the discharge end for the axial flow of the combustion gases. The combustion chamber has an ignition zone which is provided with wall bores for admitting primary air and it includes a spark plug in the ignition zone for igniting the combustion gases and the primary combustion air. The combustion chamber also has a burnout zone which is provided with wall slots for admitting secondary air downstream of the primary air.

Ultrasonic atomizing burner

A burner for air heaters comprises a first wall structure defining an ignition chamber with an ultrasonic atomizer discharging into the ignition chamber and with means for delivering primary air into the ignition chamber for ignition by suitable ignition device to form an igniting gas mixture. The construction includes a second wall arrangement which is adjacent the ignition chamber and which defines a primary combustion chamber which has a passage for the ignited gas mixture from the ignition chamber and also for secondary air so as to complete the combustion in the main combustion chamber. The main combustion chamber in turn is connected downstream and into an exhaust diffuser in which the completely burnt gases are delivered to a place of use for heating an area such as a space in a motor vehicle. In one construction, the combustion chamber is defined within a perforated tube which has a perforated bottom or rear wall facing an ignition chamber which is defined with an outer tube which is also perforated to provide for the inflow of the primary air. The ignition device is mounted in the outer tube adjacent the atomizer so as to ignite the fuel with the primary air and direct this ignited mixture into perforations of the main combustion chamber for continued burning therein. In another embodiment the primary chamber is defined by a perforated wall which defines an area within the outer perforated housing which comprises the ignition chamber having the atomizer in an igniting element. This ignition chamber communicates through perforations in the surrounding wall with an inlet for the primary air and one or more inlets for the secondary air in the remaining space within the outer housing which defines the main combustion chamber.

Burner construction for air heaters using an ultrasonic atomizer

A catalytic converter for treating exhaust gases of internal combustion engines comprises a housing having a passage therethrough for the passage of the gases and a monolithic ceramic honeycomb forming a catalyst carrier located within the housing. The honeycomb is held in spaced location from the interior walls of the housing by at least one elastic element of compacted mesh material such as a compacted metal mesh.

Catalytic converter for treatment of the exhaust gases of internal

A support arrangement is used for elastically mounting a monolithic ceramic honeycomb structure within a housing in an exhaust gas pipe and consists of a holding angle and a molded part formed of a soft, flexible material. The holding angle is rigidly secured to the inner surface of the housing with one of its legs extending along the wall of the housing and the other extending radially inwardly from the inner housing surface. The molded part is rigidly secured to the inner end of the other leg of the holding angle and extends from its point of rigid securement in generally the same direction as but spaced inwardly from the one leg of the holding angle. At its end opposite the end secured to the holding angle, the molded part is bent radially outwardly into sliding contact with the inwardly facing surface of the holding angle. The combination of the holding angle and molded part form a cavity which may be filled with a heat-resistant material. Further, the molded part is shaped to provide a shoulder or bearing surface for one end of the catalyst and also to afford a corrugation-like indentation for absorbing expansion and contraction of the catalyst.

Support for elastically mounting a ceramic honeycomb catalyst

In an internal combustion engine, a catalytic converter is elastically mounted within a tubular housing in the radial and axial directions by hollow rings. The hollow rings are located at each end of the catalytic converter and are formed, at least in part, of a thin metal foil skin or shell enclosing an elastic material such as a wire mesh or a fibrous ceramic material. Various shapes of hollow rings can be used, for instance, a single L-shaped ring can provide both radial and axial mounting at one end of a catalytic converter or a pair of oval-shaped hollow rings can be employed at one end with one ring providing radial mounting and the other ring affording axial mounting.

Elastic mounting for a catalytic converter in an internal combustion

A device for the catalytic purification of exhaust gases of internal combustion engines comprising a tubular metal housing having an exhaust gas supply connection at one end and an exhaust gas discharge connection at the opposite end and defining a gas flow passage therethrough. A tubular casing of sheet metal is disposed within the housing and spaced inwardly from the interior walls of the housing. In addition a substantially cylindrical monolithic catalyst carrier is disposed within the exhaust gas flow passage within the housing and is spaced radially inwardly from the metal casing and has axially extending passages therethrough for the flow of exhaust gases through it. A radially prestressed compacted metal mesh is disposed between the carrier and the casing and forms an elastic support for the carrier. An annular bearing member is disposed at each end of the housing and has an axially extending leg portion connected to a respective end of the tubular housing and to a respective end of the casing. In addition, the bearing member has a radially extending portion which forms an end abutment and an elastic seal ring is disposed between the end abutment and the end of the carrier. In addition a spring member having a substantially U-shaped cross section is oriented with the open U-shape bearing radially outwardly against the interior surface of the elastic seal ring.
