A method for delivering and maintaining mandatory directives data from a central office server to an on-board system. Mandatory directives include the enforceable train control data required for a train operating on controlled track. The method enables the on-board system and the central server to exchange data in a vital manner, in part by checking for any inconsistency between i) the on-board system's data as previously transmitted and ii) the required data as represented by both a transmitted set of data identifiers and an associated error correction code.

Message protocol for efficient transmission of vital directives on a guideway

An apparatus and method for train control utilizing virtual lock stepping are disclosed. In accordance with the illustrative embodiment, an improved method of train control utilizes identical software applications executing on redundant processors. The redundant processors are maintained in virtual lock step to ensure the safety integrity of the overall system being controlled. In accordance with the illustrative embodiment, one software process is a master and one software process is a slave. The master and the slave both independently execute application logic based upon detected events (e.g., input data, etc.). In order to ensure that any anomalies that might result in a hazard are detected in the timeliest manner, and that false anomalies are minimized, the redundant software processes must process the same event within a specified time frame.

Virtual lock stepping in a vital processing environment for safety assurance

A system and method that enables trains to rapidly accelerate through grade crossings from station stops or civil speed restrictions is disclosed. In some embodiments, equipped trains and grade-crossing controllers communicate wirelessly to address operational limitations pertaining to the grade crossings. In conjunction with the train's equipment, conventional crossing controllers are augmented with a communications capability and logic to accept commands to operate in a 'Prediction' mode or a 'Motion-Sensing' mode. The Prediction mode is the default operating mode for conventional constant-warning grade-crossing prediction controllers. The Motion-Sensing mode is an operating mode whereby the crossing is actuated as soon as an approach circuit detects train motion.
