This disclosure relates to protective glass, for installation in laser tools of laser processing machines, comprising a transponder in which data relating to the protective glass are stored in a contactlessly readable fashion and/or can be contactlessly stored. A grip carrying the transponder is fastened as an installation aid directly on circumferential surface of the protective glass.

In a laser machining machine () for laser welding of workpieces, in particular for lap welding of DBC structures, comprising a laser beam generator for generating a laser beam and an optical imaging system for imaging the laser beam into a machining plane, according to the invention, the optical imaging system comprises an optical beam-shaping system, which images the laser beam in the machining plane with an imaging depth (&#x394;d) of at least &#xb1;2 mm, preferably of at least &#xb1;5 mm, in such a way that the radial power density distribution (P) of the laser beam is bell-shaped along the imaging depth (&#x394;d) in each plane at right angles to the beam axis and the maximum values (P) of these bell-shaped power density distributions (P) along the imaging depth (&#x394;d) vary in relation to one another by less than 10%, preferably by less than 5%.

A laser machining head includes a focusing optical unit for focusing a laser beam in a direction of a machining zone of a workpiece and includes a cross-jet nozzle for producing a cross flow that passes through the focused laser beam transversely (e.g., at a right angle to) a beam axis of the focused laser beam. The distance of the cross-jet nozzle from the workpiece is less than 20 mm (e.g., between 8 mm and 12 mm). A nozzle body having a bottom opening that faces downward toward the workpiece is provided laterally adjacent to the focused laser beam. A protective gas flows out of the bottom opening, which is arranged below the cross-jet nozzle in order to entrain the protective gas flowing between the nozzle body and the workpiece due to the cross flow of the cross-jet nozzle so that the protective gas flows over the machining zone.

A laser processing head comprises an optical focusing unit for focusing a laser beam on a processing zone of a workpiece and an annular nozzle arranged coaxially with respect to a central axis of the laser beam for introducing an auxiliary gas into a region surrounding the processing zone. The annular nozzle is mounted on the laser processing head so as to be displaceable along the laser beam axis and can be secured to the laser processing head in different positions along the laser beam axis.
