For the production of a recording element having a photopolymerizable recording layer comprising at least two individual layers having the same composition or different compositions, located one on top of the other and firmly bonded to one another, the components used for the production of the individual layers are melted together, homogeneously mixed and freed from gaseous constituents in a self-purging, twin-screw extruder. Thereafter, the component mixture is divided into two or more material streams in a manner such that at least one material stream is removed from the extruder, transported by means of a delivery pump to an adapter or to a multilayer die and bonded there with a material stream from the screw extruder after shaping in each case to give sheet-like structures. During transport of the separate material streams, further components may be metered into or mixed with said streams, so that individual layers having the same or different properties are obtained. The individual layers or the recording layer are or is subsequently calendered.

In an apparatus for clamping printing plates for printing presses comprising two clamping strips which are displaceably arranged in a cylinder recess and held by two leaf springs and hook under an end region of the printing plate to be clamped and whose outer contours, in the clamped state, have a curvature corresponding to the cylinder curvature and each of which is bounded by a thrust surface which engages a bent-over edge claw of the printing plate to be clamped, a resilient hose being inserted between the thrust surfaces of the clamping strips and the clamping strips themselves, the clamping strips are adjustable on the one hand in the clamping direction of the printing plates by means of two cams arranged in depressions and on the other hand in a direction opposite to the clamping direction of the printing plates by means of a cam arranged between the leaf springs and in the vertical plane of symmetry of the cylinder.

Orifices, cavities or spaces which are formed when printing plates are mounted on a plate cylinder are closed and/or sealed by means of a pasty, photocurable sealing or closing compound consisting of one or more photopolymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated low molecular weight compounds (a), one or more polymeric binder (b) which are compatible with the said compounds of component (a), one or more photopolymerization initiators (c) and one or more finely divided oxidic fillers (d) which, when mixed with components (a) to (c), give mixtures which are transparent to long-wavelength UV light. After it has been applied, this sealing or closing compound is cured by exposure and can then be mechanically processed. The process is particularly suitable for closing and/or sealing orifices, cavities or spaces in gravure printing plates mounted on plate cylinders.

The gap between the ends of a gravure printing plate (3) clamped on a plate cylinder (1) is closed by an apparatus having a gap (5) -covering plate (6) and means for filling the gap cavity with plastic and curable material, consisting of two shaped pieces (7), which are mounted on the shaft ends of the plate cylinder, and a section (8) which is firmly connected to the shaped pieces and in which two displaceable pressure bars (9) are incorporated, wherein a plurality of pressure screws (10) distributed over the length of the pressure bars are arranged above each of the pressure bars.

Apparatus for clamping printing plates for rotary printing presses, having one or more clamping strips which are arranged so that they are laterally displaceable in a cylinder recess, which grip under an end region of the plate to be clamped and whose outer contour has a curvature corresponding to the cylinder curvature and is bordered by a pressure surface which engages a bent-over edge claw of the plate to be clamped, an insertable, resilient strip being inserted between the pressure surfaces of the clamping strips and a compression strip which is adjustable radially with respect to the cylinder circumference, wherein the clamping strip is adjustable in the clamping direction of the printing plates by means of two or more hydraulic cylinders which are supported at their rear and on the adjacent cylinder wall.

To close the gaps (6) which result between the end or edge sections (7) of the gravure printing plates (2) when the latter are clamped on form cylinders (1) of rotary gravure presses, the gap (6) is covered with a cover element (8) in which at least that surface region which lies on the end or edge sections (7) of the gravure printing plate (2) and covers the gap (6) is deformable under pressure and can therefore be matched up with the surface contour in the gap region, the cover element is pressed onto the surface of the gravure printing plate, the resulting gap cavity is filled with a curable filling compound and, when curing of the filling compound is complete, the cover element is removed. It is particularly advantageous to use cover elements which are in the form of hollow bodies and which are filled with a pressure-generating and pressure-transmitting medium, and the pressure exerted on the deformable surface of the cover element which lies on the gravure printing plate, and hence also the surface contour of the closed gap, can be controlled via the internal pressure in the cavity of the cover element.

An apparatus for lining a form cylinder for gravure printing with a wrap-around plate is characterized by a machine frame having insertion apertures (3) provided in the area of its side walls (2) and allocated to the lateral journals (4) of the form cylinder (5), and having a swivel frame (10) which is pivotably mounted outside the insertion apertures (3), can be fixed relative to the machine frame and accommodates a drivable pressing roller (7) mounted in rotatable eccentric bushes. In this way, the wrap-around plate can be rolled onto the form cylinder, so that a full, uniform seating of the wrap-around plate on the cylinder periphery is ensured even when the form cylinder possesses no adjustable clamping device.

The gap formed between the end sections of a gravure printing plate anchored in a groove in a forme cylinder is covered with a plate, and the resulting gap cavity is filled with plastic, curable material. When the filling has been cured, the plate is removed. In order to position the plate exactly on the gap, the plate is held, in such a way that it can be rotated and lowered, by means of a pair of guide rails mounted on the forme cylinder axle; the said pair of rails can be connected to a means for centering on the gap, this means likewise being rotatable about the said axle.

The gap (15) formed between the end portions (5) of a gravure printing plate (3) which is anchored in a groove (2) of a printing cylinder (1) on which the plate is mounted is covered with a sheet (6) which overlaps the end portions. The gap cavity (9) thus formed is then filled with a thermoplastic and/or hardenable material and when this has hardened the cover is removed.

A sheet-like structure is produced from a vinyl alcohol polymer by a method wherein, in a self-cleaning multi-screw extruder, the polymer is mixed with a small amount of water, the mixture is melted, homogenized, devolatilized and finally extruded as a melt, and the extrudate is shaped in a conventional manner into the sheet-like structure.
