An apparatus is described which serves for a pyrometallurgical processing of fine-grained solids suspended in high-oxygen gases, comprising a generally horizontally extending cylindrical vessel and a combustion shaft, which communicates with and vertically opens into the vessel which is provided with a gas outlet opening and with an opening for discharging molten material. An almost complete separation of the molten particles is effected in that the mouth of the combustion shaft tangentially opens into the vessel at the entrance of a spiral-shaped entrance passage, which opens into a discharge slot, which is formed in the shell of the vessel and which in the lower portion of the shell of the substantially cylindrical vessel extends substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vessel.

Apparatus for the pyrometallurgical processing of fine-grained solids

A current-feeding cathode-mounting device comprises a metal-sheathed carrying rail of copper and a permanent cathode plate consisting of the same material as the sheath and joined by welding at least along part of a longitudinal edge and wherein at least an end portion of the rail is unsheathed at least along part of its extent. In order to increase the creep strength and durability and to ensure a low-resistance contact, the carrying rail consists of a hollow copper section, the sheath consists of special steel, the sheath is joined to the carrying rail by a diffusion-preventing non-porous weld, and the permanent cathode of special steel is joined to the sheath by an interrupted seal weld. The carrying rail consists suitably of a copper tube. In accordance with a further feature the copper tube provided with a special steel sheath has been deformed to constitute a composite having an elliptical or oval cross-section or a cross-section having two parallel sides, and the major axis of said cross-section lies in the plane of the cathode plate.

Current-feeding cathode-mounting device

A method for the continuous pyrometallurgical processing of copper-lead matte having a high lead content relative to copper. In order to ensure an economical and ecologically satisfactory processing, the following steps are performed in a continuous sequence: (a) In one processing stage a suitable atmosphere is provided and temperatures above 1250.degree. C. and a high turbulence are maintained in a molten bath, volatile lead components are incorporated in a fine dust and liquid matte having a decreased lead content and metallic lead included in a copper-containing lead alloy are produced; (b) in another processing stage, gases which contain free oxygen are blown into or onto the liquid matte which has been produced in stage (a) and is at a temperature above 1250.degree. C. whereby a high-oxygen converter slag and a converter copper containing less than 1% by weight lead are produced and volatilizable impurities contained in the matte are incorporated in a fine dust; and (c) in a third processing stage the converter copper, which contains less than 1% by weight Pb and other impurities, such as Ni, As, Sb, is refined in that a gas which contains free oxygen is blown into or onto the molten bath. The impurities are slagged by a selective oxidation, and a prerefined copper is formed.

Method of continuous metallurgical processing of copper-lead matte

An anode for a cell for electrolytic recovery of nonferrous metals especially copper is provided with a plate-shaped deposition surface, a hanger for suspending the anode in the cell, and a perforated pipe along a bottom edge of the anode for discharging bubbles of gas upwardly in the electrolyte along the faces of the anode. A bar along an edge of the anode can be provided with a feeder for the gas communicating with the pipe and the hanger may have a passage communicating with this feeder.

A furnace for the melting and refining of raw copper and/or blister copper comprises a shaft furnace having a lock-chamber feeder for the material at the top of the shaft furnace and an opening into a hearth furnace in which the copper is refined. The shaft furnace and the hearth furnace are constructed unitarily with one another with the shaft furnace surmounting the hearth furnace in such manner that, when the apparatus has been charged, a pile of copper is formed which is supported on the bottom of the hearth furnace and slopes toward a portion of the length of the hearth furnace.
