An electrical terminal or contact element for use in an electrical connector, having a resilient tab for retaining the element in the connector housing. The tab is attached to a central portion of the element and extends diagonally through the center of the element at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the element. A free end of the tab extends beyond the element for engaging a shoulder of the housing after the element is inserted through a passageway in the housing. The free end of the tab may be deflected inwardly by means of a pin-like tool to disengage the tab from the shoulder and allow removal of the element from the housing. A stop surface in the central portion of the element prevents deflection of the tab beyond its elastic limit, thereby preventing damage to the terminal element.

The present invention relates to a method of automatically assembling and mounting contacts in plug-type connectors with the plug-type connector consisting of a housing and a strip made of insulating material, which strip can be joined with the housing and which supports the contacts. In addition, the present invention relates to connectors produced according to the method.

Plug-type electrical connectors

An electrical connector with releasable contact members is disclosed in which the electrical connector comprises an insulating body with at least one contact receiving chamber open on opposite faces and a contact member disposed inside the contact chamber. The contact member is provided with a locking tab with which the contact member can be locked into position within the chamber by engagement with a locking shoulder on one of the walls of the chamber. Upon insertion of a proper releasing tool into either face of the connector, the locking tab can be released from engagement with the locking shoulder to facilitate removal of the contact member from the insulating body. According to the invention, a releasing shoulder protrudes laterally from the locking tab so as to be positioned adjacent the locking shoulder when the contact member is locked in fixed position within the chamber. A first passageway leads from one face of the insulating body to the releasing shoulder for insertion of a releasing tool to engage and displace the releasing shoulder and thereby effect sufficient simultaneous movement of the locking tab to release the latter from locking engagement with the locking shoulder. A second pasageway leading from the other face of the insulation body permits the insertion of a releasing tool to engage and displace the locking tab directly in order to release the latter from locking engagement with the locking shoulder.

Electrical connector with releasable contact members

An electrical connector with zero insertion force for mechanically supporting and contacting the conductive fingers of printed circuit boards, liquid crystal plates, and like contact carriers. The connector is comprised of an elongated connector body, an elongated clamping member, and a clamping means to clamp the body and member toward one another with the contact carrier sandwiched therebetween. In a preferred embodiment, the connector body contains a plurality of electrical spring contacts, a portion of each contact extending slightly beyond one lateral sidewall of the body and positioned to contact one of the fingers of the contact carrier when the latter lies adjacent the sidewall. The clamping means serves to draw the body and member toward one another, thereby effecting movement of the contact carrier against the biasing force of the spring contacts and into a surface-to-surface engagement with the sidewall of the body. In the assembled condition, the contact carrier is clamped between the connector body and clamping member with the fingers in firm electrical contact with the spring contacts.

Electrical connector with zero insertion force

An electric connector comprising a dielectric housing with front and rear surfaces and a plurality of cavities extending longitudinally between the surfaces, each cavity having a pair of oppositely oriented guide ledges frontwardly disposed in the cavity and laterally extending inwardly from diagonally opposite side portions of the cavity, and a plurality of electrical contacts mounted in the housing, each contact including a pair of opposed spring arms with frontwardly disposed, inwardly bowed engagement portions for receiving a mating contact and a rearwardly disposed tail portion for receiving a conductive element, the engagement portions further including a pair of laterally offset tabs arranged for abutting engagement with the ledges to individually position and limit inward movement of each engagement portion without restricting outward movement of the engagement portion. In one embodiment, the guide ledges extend rearwardly to rear cam surfaces outwardly inclined to engage the tabs and guide the spring arms during insertion from the rear into each cavity. The embodiment also includes a rear base for supporting an upper body portion with the cavities and with rectangular openings through which the contact tail portions extend and are restricted in rotation.

Electrical connector

A housing for an electrical connector having a shell for mounting an electrical connector, attachment means for attaching the housing to a mating connecting housing and a cable clamp means for securement of a cable to be connected to the electrical connector. The shell, attachment means, and cable clamp are formed of a single piece of moulded material.
