In an apparatus for continuous corrugation of walls of tubes or tubular elements, especially cable components, at least one corrugating wheel, rotatable about its own axis, also rotates about the tubular element to be corrugated. In addition to a drive (15) for the rotation of the at least one corrugating wheel (11) about the tubular element (5) to be corrugated, there is provided a speed-controllable drive (16) for the rotation of the at least one corrugating wheel about its own axis.

In a method and apparatus for manufacturing an optical fiber cable, a metal band is gradually shaped into a lengthwise slotted tube, the optical fibers are introduced into the still open slotted tube, the lengthwise slot of the tube is welded and the outside diameter of the welded tube is reduced. The welded tube with the reduced outside diameter is wound at least once around a take-up reel. A force provided on the reduced outside diameter welded tube as it is wound on the take-up reel causes an elastic strain of 0.1 to 0.6% on the tube. The strain is released on the take-up reel to produce an overlength of the optical fibers relative to the reduced outside diameter welded tube.

Apparatus for manufacturing an optical cable from a metal tube

A method of producing an overhead contact wire for supplying power to electrically driven vehicles is proposed which comprises a copper-clad steel wire and a copper wire that is metallically joined to the copper-clad steel wire. The method includes the following steps: a) heating a steel wire to a temperature about 950.degree. C.; b) joining first and second metal band sections to a surface of the steel wire by means of rolling at a temperature of about 950.degree. C. under protective gas atmosphere to produce a combined element; c) reducing the cross-section of the combined element by at least 20%; d) heating a copper wire to a temperature about 950.degree. C.; e) joining the heated copper wire to the reduced diameter combined element in the area covered by the first band section by rolling at about 950.degree. C. under protective gas to produce a prepared wire; and f) reducing the cross-section of the prepared wire to produce an overhead contact wire.

A high frequency coaxial cable (1) contains a concentric internal conductor (3), a cylindrical insulating layer (7) surrounding the internal conductor (3) and made of a foamed plastic containing more than 50% by volume of air, a tubular external conductor (9) placed over the insulating layer (7), and an outer sheath (11). Cutouts (15, 15') are made in the insulating layer (7) by removing insulation material starting at the periphery (13) of the insulating layer and extending radially inward. These cutouts (15, 15') make it possible to increase the dielectric properties of the insulating layer between internal conductor (3) and external conductor (9).

A metallic sheath for an electric cable with a ratio of inner diameter Di to outer diameter Do of at least 0.9, comprises a lengthwise welded, annularly or helically shaped corrugated tube whose wall thickness is in a range between 0.005 and 0.009 of the outer diameter, and where the distance p between two neighboring corrugation crests is in a range between 0.08 and 0.12 of the outer diameter. In addition, a method of making the above described electric cable is described.

A method for producing a sector conductor for electric power cables is introduced, whereby a number of metal wires are joined closely together into a core (8) with a sector-shaped cross section. A lengthwise running metal strip is formed around the core (8) and its longitudinally abutting edges are welded into a tube (9), whose dimensions are reduced so that it lies closely against the core (8) and surrounds it.

Method for producing a sector conductor for electric power cables

In a method for producing lengthwise welded metal tubes, a metal tape is drawn from a supply reel and is gradually formed into a slotted tube, and the slotted tube is welded by a laser beam, the tape edges are heated by a separate laser beam. The laser beams for the heating and welding strike the lengthwise seam at an angle that is less than 15.degree. from the vertical, the distance between the burn spots produced by the laser beams is between 1 and 5 mm, and the power applied to the tape edges by the first laser beam is sufficient to raise the temperature of the tape edges to at least one half of the T.sub.F -T.sub.R difference, where T.sub.F is the fusing temperature of the metal and T.sub.R is the room temperature.

In a method for producing internally grooved tubes for heat exchangers, a smooth metal tape is drawn from a circular supply, a rolling mill provides it with a number of grooves that are parallel to each other and run at an angle of 15.degree. to 45.degree. with respect to the lengthwise direction of the tape, the tape is continuously formed into a tube with a lengthwise slot, and the slot is welded. At least two groups of parallel grooves are rolled into the surface of the metal tape so that the grooves form a herringbone pattern.

In a method for producing a lengthwise welded metal tube with an outside diameter of 1 to 6 mm, whereby a metal band is shaped into a lengthwise slotted tube by a forming tool, and the lengthwise slot of the tube is welded by a laser welding installation, the tube to be welded passes immediately before and immediately after the welding point area through a guide that guides the surface of the tube to keep the edges of the band in contact with each other and keeps the welded seam stress-free. The jaws of a clamping tool grip the welded tube immediately downstream of the guide to keep it from twisting.

A method for manufacturing a coaxial cable is described, whereby a dielectric layer (2) is extruded over an inner conductor (1), a lengthwise incoming metal strip (3) is formed into a tube, having a lengthwise slot around the insulated conductor (1, 2). The tube (3) is welded along the slot to thereby form a welded seam (4), and the welded tube is drawn down onto the surface of the dielectric layer (2). A metal strip (3a) having a plastic coating (3b) at least on one of its major surfaces is used to form the tube (3), and its lengthwise edges are welded by a laser (19).

An apparatus for the continuous marking of elongated stock moving in the direction of extension of the stock and including one or more nozzles for directing a dye-jet towards the elongated stock is improved by causing the nozzles to oscillate in a plane parallel to the direction of movement of the elongated stock to be marked; and the jets as produced by flows in the respective nozzle along the plane of oscillation and are redirected to emerge at right angles to the plane of oscillation; the nozzles either include a first duct extending in the nozzle body in a particular direction and being continued in a second duct extending at 90 degrees; alternatively a nozzle is a tube of L-shaped configuration.

Continuously marking elongated stock

In known cables, the cable core is surrounded by a metallic inner layer of a sheath, and the inner layer is enclosed by a corrugated metallic outer layer of the sheath. In these cables, a high resistance against corrosion and high temperatures at a good shielding of the electric conductors is not ensured. The new cable (1) including the inner sheath layer (19) which is made of at least one flexible copper band (11) and defined by an electromagnetic shielding with a shielding attenuation from 80 to 115 dB, with the shield attenuation in this range being dependent from the wall thickness of the inner layer and rising monotonously with increasing wall thickness, and the outer sheath layer (27) which is made of a steel band and increases the high temperature resistance of the cable 1, has the advantages of a good temperature resistance even at high ambient temperatures, like e.g. in case of fire, and a high resistance with regard to corrosion. The proposed cable is suitable in particular for use as power cable or control cable on ships.

A method is disclosed for manufacturing an optical fiber cable element having plurality of optical fibers which are arranged with excess length inside a pressure-tight metal tube. Means are provided inside the metal tube for protecting the optical fibers and for longitudinal sealing. The optical fibers are first embedded in a soft or compressible compound to form a cable element core. The outside, diameter of the cable element core generally corresponds to the inside diameter of the metal tube in the finished cable and the optical fibers being present with excess length in the cable element core. A metal band is subsequently continuously formed into a slotted tube surrounding the cable element core. A distance remains between the cable element core and the tube. The slotted tube is welded together and the tube is drawn down onto the cable element core.
