A method for determining a parameter representative of a quantity of hydrocarbon-containing compounds present in free form within a sedimentary rock, wherein a first sample representative of the sedimentary rock is obtained and a second sample which is representative of isolated total organic matter in the sedimentary rock is obtained by eliminating a free mineral portion part of the second sample. Each of the samples are processed according to steps comprising heating the sample according to a first heating sequence under an inert atmosphere, and continuously measuring a representative quantity of the hydrocarbon-containing compounds released during at least a part of the first heating sequence. A representative quantity of CO and a representative quantity of COreleased during a second heating sequence is measured. The parameter representative of the quantity of hydrocarbon-containing compounds present in free form within the sedimentary rock from the first and second samples is determined.

Method for estimating the quantity of free hydrocarbons in a sample of sedimentary rock

The invention is a method of assessing at least one petroleum characteristic of a rock sample. Starting from a temperature ranging between 50&#xb0; C. and 120&#xb0; C., the temperature of a rock sample is raised to a temperature ranging between 180&#xb0; C. and 220&#xb0; C. Temperature (T) is maintained for a predetermined time duration. The temperature of the sample is increased to a temperature (T) ranging 330&#xb0; C. and 370&#xb0; C. Temperature (T) is maintained for a predetermined time duration. The temperature of the sample is then raised to a temperature (T) ranging 630&#xb0; C. and 670&#xb0; C. Three quantities S, Sand S, representative of the amount of hydrocarbon compounds released during the temperature change stages, are measured and at least one petroleum characteristic of the sample is deduced from these quantities.
