For manufacturing a pulse generator wherein a voltage pulse dependent on the change in magnetic field can be achieved by sudden magnetic reversal (Barkhausen skip) given an applied magnetic field, an iron alloy is employed for one of the materials of the composite member, the additional alloy constituents of this iron alloy being selected such that a structural conversion with volume change respectively occurs at different temperatures. For producing the stressed condition, a thermal treatment is then implemented, which includes heating above the upper transition temperature and a cooling below the lower transition temperature. As a result, substantially greater stresses between the materials of the composite member arise, causing a pulse behavior significantly improved in comparison to known pulse generators of the type capable of recognizing constant or alternating magnetic fields.

For security against theft or for identification of products using an electronic alternating field in an interrogation zone, a pulse generator, upon magnetic reversal due to a Barkhausen jump, exhibits an impulse behavior that produces characteristic harmonics and largely prevents confusion with other magnetically soft materials in the interrogation zone. This pulse generator is formed of an amorphous strip or an amorphous wire with a cobalt content of at least 20 at-%, subjected to a heat treatment by a current flowing through the strip or wire, to produce a ratio of remanence induction to saturation induction of between 0.2 and 0.9.

A deactivatable anti-theft security strip has a soft-magnetic constituent and a hard-magnetic constituent. The hard-magnetic constituent is used for two purposes. It is used first to stress the soft-magnetic constituent and thereby to promote a fast magnetic reversal, and it is also used to deactivate the strip by magnetization. The pre-stressed, soft-magnetic constituent produces defined, steep pulses even in the presence of a slow magnetic reversal, so that the anti-theft security strip is especially suited for alternating fields having low frequencies, for example 50 or 60 Hz.

A composite member particularly suited for anti-theft security systems is composed of a core of soft-magnetic material having a nickel-iron alloy (in weight percent) of 55 through 82 nickel, 0 through 4 molybdenum, the remainder iron, or an aluminum-iron alloy having 5 through 16% aluminum, the remainder iron, with a cobalt-vanadium-iron alloy or a cobalt-chromium-iron alloy envelope for the composite member.
