A one-part, solvent free in-mold coating composition exhibiting good hardness, good crack resistance, and good adhesion to fiber reinforced plastic substrates includes a blend of a urethane polyacrylate compound having three or more (meth)acrylate groups, a urethane diacrylate or urethane divinyl compound, one or more adhesion promoters, and one or more ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomers.

In-mold coating composition

A one-package primerless structural adhesive is disclosed that is particularly well suited for adhering one or more substrates of fiber-reinforced plastics. This adhesive uses dicyandiamide, its substituted derivatives, or melamine as the principal curative. A polyisocyanate prepolymer is made from various polyols reacted with polyisocyanates. In the absence of moisture, the curative and polyisocyanate can coexist in a single package without reacting for periods of time in excess of four months. Upon heating the adhesive to 150.degree. C., it cures in about five minutes or less, forming an initial structural bond that after heat aging is often stronger than the cohesive strength of the fiber reinforced substrate.

One-package structural adhesive

The present invention provides a composite material comprised of a matrix polymer and a reinforcing polymer, called a rigid rod polymer, which is well dispersed in the matrix polymer. This material displays enhanced mechanical properties. The matrix polymer is preferably cured resin, preferably epoxy resin. The rigid rod polymer may be made from polyazomethines, polyimides or polycarbodimides, or mixtures thereof. Preferably, the reinforcing polymer is a polyazomethine. The invention also relates to a method for making the composite material. The composite material is preferably made by first dissolving the rigid rod polymer precursors in the matrix polymer precursors, then polymerizing the rigid rod polymer precursors in-situ and then polymerizing the matrix polymer precursors, in-situ. Alternatively, the rigid rod polymer precursors may be polymerized in-situ simultaneously with the polymerization of the matrix polymer precursors.

In situ thermoset molecular composites

A composite material is comprised of an in situ polymerized rigid rod polymer and an in situ polymerized matrix polymer. The composite material is isotropic and has enhanced mechanical properties as well as improved temperature resistance, improved solvent resistance and improved moisture resistance.

In-situ composites

The present invention relates to a primerless, one-part, storage stable, fast heat curable, abrasion-resistant coating composition useful as a low friction coating for an EPDM glass run channel in vehicles or similar applications. The coating composition comprises a blocked polyurethane prepolymer, a coreactive crosslinking agent, and a compatible silicone oil. The blocked polyurethane is desirably made from a hydroxyl terminated hydrogenated diene polymer or polyolefin, which is reacted with excess equivalents of a polyisocyanate reactant and the isocyanate groups blocked with a blocking agent. The cured polyurethane has very good abrasion resistance.

Abrasion resistant polyurethane blend compositions

Sheet molding compounds are thickened (or maturated) via 'in situ' formation of polyureas made from aromatic primary diamines with reduced basicity and diisocyanates. The molding compounds, which can optionally contain mineral fillers such as chopped glass fiber, are generally based upon unsaturated polyester resins having a high percentage of hydroxyl end groups, polymerizable vinyl compounds such as styrene, and the like. The thickened compositions are tack-free and compression moldable after less than one day, typically after less than several hours, into permanently shaped, strong rigid articles, such as automotive body parts. A viscosity plateau is reached and maintained by the maturated compounds of the present invention for extended periods of time, e.g., several weeks.

Thickened molding resin compositions and cured molded compounds

Polyamides such as nylon-6 type polyamides are prepared by the reaction or copolymerization of a major amount by weight of a lactam and a minor amount by weight of a graft copolymer of maleic anhydride on a low molecular weight liquid conjugated diene polymer or copolymer or of a copolymer of a conjugated diene and a monovinyl aryl monomer or a nitrile. For example, a graft of maleic anhydride on liquid butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer is copolymerized with epsilon-caprolactam using an anionic lactam polymerization catalyst (a lactamate salt) like the reaction product of ethyl magnesium bromide and epsilon-caprolactam. The present invention may be useful in a RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) process. The resulting polyamides have improved impact strength and water resistance. They can be used to make automobile and truck bodies and parts.

Polymerization of lactam with graft copolymer promoter

Polyamides from lactams are prepared by the reaction of an initiator compound, a liquid hydroxy containing nitrile copolymer and a lactam using as a catalyst a minor amount of a lactam anionic polymerization catalyst. The resulting polyamides exhibit high impact strength and improved dimensional stability or reduced sensitivity to dimensional change upon exposure to a high humidity environment.
