The present invention concerns highly swellable absorption mediums with a reduced caking tendency at high humidity and/or high temperatures, wherein a swellable polymer is coated with a non-ionic, nitrogen-containing surfactant and optionally a Lewis acid and then reacted by heating.

The invention relates to hydrophilic superabsorbent polymer comprising a) from about 55 to about 99.9 wt. % of polymerizable unsaturated acid group containing monomers; b) from about 0.001 to about 5.0 wt. % of internal crosslinking agent; c) from about 0.001 to about 5.0 wt. % of surface crosslinking agent applied to the particle surface; and d) wherein the composition has a degree of neutralization of more than about 20%, and from about 20 mole % to about 75 mole % of the unsaturated acid group containing monomers are neutralized with a first neutralizing agent, and from about 5 mole % to about 40 mole % of the unsaturated acid group containing monomers are neutralized with a second neutralizing agent; at a temperature of about 75&#xb0; C. or less. Such hydrophilic superabsorbent polymers have an Absorption Time of about 5+10 aminutes or greater, where a is the mean particle size of the superabsorbent material in millimeters, a capacity of about 15 g/g or greater, a Drop Penetration Value of about 2 seconds or less, and a floatability of 50% or less.

Superabsorbent polymer with slow absorption times

The invention relates to hydrophilic, highly swellable polymers for aqueous fluids, e.g. superabsorbants, which are coated with reactive, water-insoluble, film-forming, hydrophobic polymers and an additional reactive constituent which can react with carboxyl groups of carboxylate anions and form additional cross-links on the particle surface. The invention also relates to the production of superabsorber thus coated and their use in hygiene articles used to absorb body fluids. The products obtained by coating highly swellable, hydrophilic, insoluble polymers with reactive, water-insoluble, film-forming, hydrophobic polymers and an additional reactive component are characterized in that their absorption speed cam be adjusted in an controlled manner extended area according to the type and amount of reactive, water-insoluble, film-forming, hydrophobic polymers used in the coating and according to process engineering conditions chosen for said coating.

Superabsorbants with controlled absorption speed

The invention relates to an absorbent insert for foodstuff packagings, the liquid-absorbing component of which is a superabsorbent polymer which, in a hitherto unrivaled fashion, persistently absorbs and retains large quantities of liquid even under high pressure load, protects the foodstuffs from bacterial decay, and prevents contamination of the packaging goods by migrating soluble constituents of the polymer. This combination of properties of the superabsorbers used is expressed by the Q quotient of retention according to the tea bag test&plus;absorption against pressure (AAP) 0.3, divided by the amount of solubles (LA), which quotient is at least 20. Superabsorbers having such properties are obtained by using special combinations of crosslinkers. Furthermore, the invention relates to a process for producing said absorbent inserts and their use in foodstuff packagings, as ice substitute, and as leak-proofing means in transport packagings.
