Continuous process for producing unidirectionally reinforced composite materials by impregnating a continuous reinforcing fiber strand with a thermoplastic matrix in an impregnating bath containing a dispersion of a thermoplastic powder by measuring the width of the strand leaving the impregnating bath and using this measured value for regulating the polymer concentration in the impregnating bath.

Production of composites from polymer powder dispersions

Lightweight composite material which contains reinforcing fibres in a thermoset matrix and has been obtained by providing voluminous three-dimensional structures of reinforcing fibres more than 50 mm long, which are in the form of a knitted fabric or loop fabric with a hollow space content of at least 50 vol. %, with a thermosetting resin such that the lightweight composite material contains hollow spaces.

A process for the continuous production of laminated sheet materials of thermoplastic polymers, reinforcing fibers and metals, in which endless sheets of reinforcing fibers, thermoplastic polymers and metals are combined in layers and the layers thus combined are continuously exposed for 0.1 to 10 minutes to a pressure of 0.5 to 50 bar at a temperature 20.degree. to 150.degree. Process for the continuous production of laminated sheets

To produce mouldings for screening against electromagnetic radiation it is highly advantageous to use metal fibre-containing composite materials as obtained by impregnating a bundle of continuous metal filament fibres with a polymeric adhesion-promoting substance, sheathing the resulting compact precursor with a thermoplastic matrix and cutting the resulting extrudate of composite material into defined lengths. The composite materials can be used as such or together with thermoplastic granules.

Process for the manufacture of continuous moulded bodies from structures of reinforcing fibres impregnated with thermoplastic plastics, wherein a structure of reinforcing fibres is passed through a melt of the thermoplastic at a pressure of 1 to 800 bar for a length of at least 300 mm and a device for carrying out the process.

Manufacturing composite materials

A lightweight composite material is disclosed which comprises three-dimensionally arranged fibers of at least 50 mm length provided in a thermoplast matrix. The thermoplast matrix is thermally treated to form cavities within the matrix.

The continuous process makes it possible to reduce the water content of polymers to minor residual levels (ppm) by adding to a W/O-emulsion an extractant which is subsequently evaporated with the oil.
