The invention relates to a method for energizing an HF resonant circuit which contains an igniter as a component for igniting a fuel-air mixture in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine by means of a corona discharge, wherein the igniter comprises an ignition electrode and an insulator surrounding the ignition electrode, by means of a DC-AC inverter which is excited by successive current pulses which each last while a switch controlled by a control circuit is in its conducting switching state. It is provided according to the invention that the switch is actuated when an instantaneous value of an alternating current or an alternating current voltage excited in the HF resonant circuit falls below a first switching threshold (A&#x2212;, B&#x2212;, C&#x2212;) and the switch s actuated when the instantaneous value of the alternating current or the alternating current voltage excited in the HF resonant circuit exceeds a second switching threshold (A+, B+, C+).

The invention relates to an ignition system for the ignition of fuel in a vehicle engine by means of a corona discharge, comprising a voltage converter which has an input side for connection to a voltage source, and an output side, and an electric oscillating circuit connected to the secondary side for HF excitation of an ignition electrode. According to the invention, by an energy accumulator for charging from the electrical system of a vehicle, the energy accumulator being connected to the input side of the voltage converter to even out the electrical system load. The invention furthermore relates to a method according to the invention for the ignition of fuel.

HF Ignition Device

The invention relates to a method for igniting a fuel/air mixture in one or more combustion chambers which are delimited by walls that are at ground potential, wherein an electric resonant circuit is excited in which an ignition electrode, which is guided through one of the walls delimiting the combustion chamber in an electrically insulated manner and which extends into the combustion chamber, in cooperation with the walls of the combustion chamber that are at ground potential constitutes a capacitance, and in which the excitation of the resonant circuit is controlled such that a corona discharge igniting the fuel/air mixture is created in the combustion chamber at the ignition electrode. The strength of the AC current flowing in the resonant circuit, the AC voltage exciting the resonant circuit and/or the impedance of the resonant circuit are monitored, and the observations or one or more measurement variables derived therefrom and/or the time curve thereof are used to obtain indicators that characterize the state of the combustion chamber and/or the state of the material mixture present in the combustion chamber and are provided for further processing.

Method and system for igniting a fuel-air-mixture of a combustion chamber, in particular in a combustion engine by creating a corona discharge

The invention relates to an HF ignition device for igniting a fuel in an internal combustion engine with a corona discharge, comprising an ignition electrode, an insulating body on which the ignition electrode is mounted, the insulating body having a continuous channel in which an inner conductor leading to the ignition electrode is disposed, and an outer conductor which encloses the insulating body and, in combination with a section of the inner conductor, forms a capacitor, wherein the channel is filled with an electrically conductive filling material which encloses at least one conductor piece that forms at least one section of the inner conductor.

HF ignition device

Described is an igniter comprising an arrangement composed of an ignition electrode, an outer conductor coaxially enclosing the ignition electrode, and an electric insulator disposed between the ignition electrode and the outer conductor, via which insulator the ignition electrode and the outer conductor are interconnected, for igniting a fuel/air mixture in a combustion chamber, in particular in an internal combustion engine comprising one or more combustion chambers which are delimited by walls that are at ground potential, by creating a corona discharge in an area surrounding the tip of the ignition electrode. According to the invention, the ratio of the outer diameter d of the ignition electrode and the inner diameter D of the outer conductor is in the range of 0.3 to 0.44.
