A method of identifying an animal from a distance by a miniature responder includes implanting a responder (1) in the form of an injectable capsule, subcutaneously and laterally of the front part of the head of the animal between an eye (3) and the sensitive (mostly bald) nose tip (4), at the side (5) of the upper jaw (6). An apparatus for feeding, baiting and/or watering animals having a miniature responder implanted therein according to this method includes a detection coil (12) disposed in close proximity to a feeding, baiting, or watering device (11) so as to be poorly accessible to the animal, the device having a shape and/or position for guiding the animal's nose in use to the device (11) in a natural manner so that the miniature responder is well-oriented and well-centered relative to the detection coil (12).

Method of making animals identifiable by means of a miniature responder,

Livestock feeding apparatus including a housing having a head insertion opening and a dosing device responsive to the presence of selected specimens of the livestock for presenting food within the housing. An animal may gain access to the food by inserting its head through the opening. A valve is mounted adjacent the head insertion opening for movement between a closed position in which the valve occludes the opening and an open position in which the valve does not occlude the opening. Mechanisms are provided for moving the valve to the open position when one of the selected livestock specimens is present and returning the valve to the closed position after a predetermined period of time has elapsed. The valve prevents an animal from loitering in feeding position with its head inserted in the opening.

Automatic feeding apparatus

Apparatus for feeding livestock, provided with a housing having a head insertion opening via which the animals can take in the food, and comprising a dosing device for food supply to the housing and responsive to the presence of selected specimens of the animals. There are provided discharge means for food leavings from the housing, said discharge means becoming operative upon removal of the head of an animal from the head insertion opening, and inoperative in the presence of the head of an animal in the head insertion opening.
