A single axis multi-speed planetary transmission of the epicyclic type is provided in which a single rotating housing encloses and carries three epicyclic gear sets. Hollow end portions of the rotating housing are carried on a stationary housing by bearings and quill shafts extend from the end portions and are connected to brakes carried on the stationary housing. Two fluid operated clutches are provided within the rotating housing to selectively interconnect certain of the components of the epicyclic gear sets and together with the two brakes provide controls to effect one reverse and five forward speeds. The output shaft is a quill shaft and the input shaft extends through the transmission, and through the output shaft, to provide a power takeoff shaft at the output end of the transmission.

Multi-speed planetary transmission

A transmission shift mechanism having straight line movement. The shift control operates a single shift rail carrying two shift forks to provide three speeds and a neutral position.

Transmission shift mechanism

A double acting hydraulic actuator for operating in a power shift transmission. An accumulator operates with two hydraulic clutches to dampen surges in pressures and to store energy in the hydraulic system during operation of the hydraulic system.

A pressure responsive relief valve closing responsive to clutch actuating pressure and opening responsive to centrifugal forces and a spring force to relieve residual pressure in the hydraulic actuator of a rotating clutch to avoid clutch drag.

Centrifugal hydraulic head relief valve

A torsional vibration damper having limit stops to limit the compression of the springs and to avoid overstraining of the springs. Spring retainers which seat on the driving and driven members have protrusions and recesses to minimize relative rubbing motion and wear and provide improved alignment of the spring seats in the assembly with the springs and the driving and driven members.

A double acting hydraulic actuator for hydraulic clutches having a single piston for selectively actuating each of the hydraulic clutches. The hydraulic actuator includes a hydraulic cylinder in which a single piston is positioned which reciprocates to operate a hydraulic clutch in one direction and a second hydraulic clutch in the other direction.

A side mounted transmission shifting mechanism having a lever pivotally connected for reciprocating and pivoting a crank arm on the crankshaft to shift a vehicle transmission. The crank arm selectively engages one of a plurality of shift rails to selectively shift the transmission.

A two-speed power take-off drive having interchangeable output shafts for selectively reciprocating a cammed shaft for biasing elements shifting a clutch collar for the two-speed operation.

Two-speed power take-off

An auxiliary transmission having a three-clutch input operating through selective multiple countershafts including a carrier supporting the countershafts angularly spaced around the output shaft which is rotatably supported centrally within the carrier. The auxiliary transmission multiplies the speed ratios of the main transmission to multiply the overall power train speed ratios and/or provide forward and reverse power shifting for the gear train as so desired.

A shift control mechanism having a detent means for selectively positioning the shifting mechanism for selective and alternative engagement of hydraulic actuators in a power shift transmission through spool valves operated by a control rack connected to the shifting mechanism.

Shift control detent mechanism

A hydraulic stack valve assembly for controlling the pressure and flow of hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic system. The stack valve assembly includes a valve body including flow control valves and a valve cover including pressure control valves and a flow director plate sandwiched between the flow control and the pressure control valves for directing modulated and regulated pressurized fluid through the flow control valves to hydraulic actuators in the hydraulic system. The stack valve has the provision of interchanging the flow director plate to modify the valve assembly and adapting the valve for use of the desired number of flow control valves and the pressure control valves best suited to the hydraulic system in which the valve assembly is used.

Hydraulic stack valve assembly

A clutch pedal operated mechanical transmission brake for stopping the rotating elements in a transmission during shifting to reduce shifting time. The force applying the brake is limited since it is transmitted through resilient means to avoid overheating of the brake and prevent the brake from being used to stop the vehicle.

Mechanical transmission brake

A means for adjusting a plurality of bearings rotatably supporting a plurality of rotating elements by controlling the axial dimension on the rotating elements and bearing supports to allow one adjustment to align all bearings.

Multiple bearing adjusting device

A stationary sun gear mounted on a sleeve fixed to the transmission housing. The sleeve provides a bearing support internally and externally of the sleeve for rotatably mounting rotating members on the sleeve. The mounting of the gear and sleeve assembly permits individual replacement of the sun gear and support sleeve as well as servicing of the bearings.
