A method for sending a remote power feed to a terminal in a local area network. A repeater of the local area network produces adetectiontestsignal in a line to which a remote terminal is connected, and the signal has an energy level that will not damage the terminal. The presence of a remote terminal adapted to receive a remote power feed via the repeater is detected by detecting the presence of a predetermined impedance in the terminal, and power is supplied to the terminal via the repeater in response to detection of the presence of the terminal.

Before any supply of remote power to a telecommunications terminal connected to a local area network, the Ethernet equipment must recognize the power class of the terminal by measuring a specific electrical signature of the terminal via their interconnection. If the Ethernet equipment is unable to supply the required power, then it will send a specific signal via the interconnection which will activate an alarm on the terminal. The possibility to be alerted by a specific alarm from the terminal if no remote power can be supplied to it, will advantageously inform the terminal user of the problem and allow the user to look for an alternative.

A terminal adapter connects a terminal to a computer local area network capable of identifying any of several terminal types by detecting the presence of a particular identifier electronic circuit specific to one type, even though the terminal does not include any such identifier circuit as standard. The terminal adapter includes first connectors for inserting the adapter between two sections of a connection between the terminal and the network and an identifier circuit specific to one type of terminal that the network is able to detect. The identifier circuit is connected to at least two conductors of a network side section of the connection.

A first resistor is connected in parallel with a second resistor having a lower resistance than the first resistor. The voltage at the terminal of the first resistor is compared with a first threshold voltage, and the voltage at the terminals of the second resistor is compared with a second threshold voltage. A switching device either connects the first resistor in series in a remote power feed circuit, if the switching device detects that the remote power feed current is less than a third threshold current that is between the first and second threshold currents, or connects the second resistor and the first resistor, connected in parallel, in series in the remote power feed circuit if the switching device detects that the remote power feed current is greater than the third threshold current.

Each station is connected to the token ring network (5) through station and token ring interface units, the latter of which units has a switch (37) for connecting the station to the token ring (5) to transmit signals it receives in digital form either from the token ring or from the station via the associated station interface unit. The data signal received from a station clocked by an oscillator of that station is transcoded in the associated token ring interface unit before it is recoded in its original form under the control of an oscillator (12) common to the stations of the device which is slaved to the oscillator of one of the stations taken as a master station.

A time-division switching system, in particular a multiservice key telephone or PABX system, is controlled by programmed management logic and synchronized by a timebase for selective on-demand exchange of information between terminations to which telecommunications terminals are connected either directly or through links to other, identical or at least compatible switching systems. The system includes programmed system management logic based on an optionally duplicated processor with directly addressable memory which stores all command operations, in particular those for switching information exchanged by means of the terminations which are connected in parallel to a port of the processor by a bus-type time-division multiplex link.
