An on-screen display with variable resolution capability permits respective parts of a screen to be processed according to their respective resolution requirements. For any active window in the on-screen display, the data format used in memory to represent the pixels of that window can be determined, thereby permitting the window resolution to vary from window to window.

A data processing system (10) is disclosed which comprises a microprocessor host (12) coupled to a decoding system (14). A host interface block (18) receives a bit stream and passes bit stream on to a system decoder block (20). The system decoder block (20) extracts the appropriate data from the bit stream and loads an input buffer (24) or an optional external buffer (26). An audio decoder block (28) retrieves the data from the input buffer (24) and generates scale factor indices, bit per code word values and subband samples which are stored in an arithmetic unit buffer (30). A hardware filter arithmetic unit block (32) retrieves the information from the arithmetic unit buffer (30) and dequantizes, transforms and filters the data to generate PCM output data which is loaded into a PCM buffer (34). The data within the PCM buffer (34) is output by a PCM output block (36) to a digital-to-analog converter (16).

A data processing system (10) uses a microprocessor host (12) coupled to a decoding system (14). A hardware filter arithmetic unit block (32) retrieves decoded information from the arithmetic unit buffer (30) and dequantizes, transforms and filters the data to generate PCM output data which is loaded into a PCM buffer (34). An address circuit forms several addresses from a single value to accesses multiple sources of data and coefficients simultaneously for use by the hardware filter arithmetic unit.

According to this process, a speech signal is analyzed in a vector quantizer (1) in which the acoustic parameters are calculated for each interval of time of a predetermined value and are compared with each spectral reference template contained in a reference template dictionary (2) utilizing a distance calculation. The sequence obtained at the output of the vector quantizer (1) is then compared with each of the words stored in a word lexicon (5) in a phonetic form utilizing phonetic distribution tables (3) associated with each template. A particular word of the speech to be recognized is then recognized as corresponding to a word stored in the lexicon having the maximum probability of its constituent phonetic units according to the phonetic distribution tables.

A speech encoding process, wherein a first sequence of input data representative of a written version of a message to be coded is encoded to provide a first encoded speech sequence corresponding to the written version of the message to be coded, and a second sequence of input data derived from speech defining a spoken version of the same message is analyzed by a linear predictive codeing analyzer and encoding circuit to provide a second encoded speech sequence corresponding to the spoken version of the message to be coded. The codes of the corresponding written message and the codes of the spoken message are then combined in a control circuit encompassing an adaptation algorithm, and a composite encoded speech sequence is generated corresponding to the message from the combination of the first encoded speech sequence of the written version of the message and encoded intonation parameters of speech included in a portion of the second encoded speech sequence corresponding to the spoken version of the message. In a particular aspect of the speech encoding process, the encoded intonation parameters of speech included in the portion of the second encoded speech sequence corresponding to the spoken version of the message to be coded may be encoded data of the duration and pitch as the portion of the second encoded speech sequence combined with the first encoded speech sequence.
