An apparatus for characterizing an effluent formed by a multiphase fluid mixture is described, said apparatus comprising a source emitting gamma rays at a plurality of energy levels through said effluent towards a detector block that takes account of the photons it receives as a consequence thereof to deduce therefrom the attenuation of said rays by said effluent. The detector block includes a filter for selectively detecting the photons it receives at a first energy level and at a second energy level, said first and second levels being predetermined amongst the energy levels of radiation from the source.

Apparatus and a method for characterizing multiphase effluents

An insert device for narrowing a throat of a Venturi based multiphase flow meter is shaped to be inserted in the throat. The insert comprises an entrance window and an exit window for a radiation beam generated at a periphery of the throat. The insert allows pressure takeoff to be made in a conventional way. Several examples of insert device are described including a rod, a tubular and a tuning fork insert.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for estimating brine water conductivity in a multiphase mixture of brine water and other substances by combining measured mixture permittivity and conductivity with a known or derived relationship between brine water conductivity and brine water permittivity. A number of applications for the brine water conductivity estimate are disclosed including making salinity corrections of a dual energy flow meter.

Methods and apparatus for estimating on-line water conductivity of multiphase mixtures

The invention relates to a flow rate measurement method adapted to oil effluents made up of multiphase fluid mixtures comprising water, oil, and gas. The effluent is passed through a Venturi in which the effluent is subjected to a pressure drop (&Dgr;p), a mean value (<&Dgr;p>) of the pressure drop is determined over a period t corresponding to a frequency f that is low relative to the frequency at which gas and liquid alternate in a slug flow regime, a mean value (<&rgr; >) is determined for the density of the fluid mixture at the constriction of the Venturi over said period t , and a total mass flow rate value <Q> is deduced for the period t under consideration from the mean values of pressure drop and of density.

Method and apparatus for measuring oil effluent flow rates

The invention relates to a method of characterizing an oil borehole effluent, formed by a multiphase fluid mixture typically containing water, oil, and gas. According to the invention, a gadolinium 153 source is used to emit gamma rays at a first energy level of about 100 keV and at a second energy level of about 40 keV, and the attenuation of the gamma rays at these two energy levels is measured after the rays have passed through the effluent.

To study the properties of a multiphase fluid under pressure flowing along a duct, such as the petroleum stream produced by an oil well, a fraction of the fluid is taken from a substantially vertical first length of the duct within which the fluid is agitated and flows upwards, and this fraction is transferred into a separator receptacle with the top of said receptacle being connected to a second length of the duct located downstream from the first length and at a slightly lower pressure relative thereto. Thereafter, the volume ratio of the liquid phases can be determined, e.g. by pouring them into the separator receptacle and measuring the levels thereof, or by causing the liquid emulsion to flow through an appropriate sensor device and where the emulsion density can be determined by weighing the separator receptacle before and after such a liquid phase/emulsion pouring step.

A device for measuring flow rate of multiphase fluids such as oilwell effluents, containing liquid hydrocarbons, gas, and water includes first and second sections situated at a distance one from the other in the flow direction, each including a passage provided with structure such as venturis for inducing a change of speed therein, and respective means for measuring the resulting pressure differences, the pressure difference signals obtained in the respective sections being suitable for cross-correlation to produce a signal representative of the total volume flow rate.

Method and apparatus for measuring multiphase flows

A depth measurement system produces independent signals, each presumably corresponding to the same movement of a wireline if produced under ideal wireline measurement conditions. The system utilizes the signals to provide an accurate and repeatable signal under varying wireline measurement conditions and is particularly suitable for driving a recorder for depth recording and merging measurements from tools lowered in the borehole on different runs and to detect slippage between the wireline and a tangential wheel used to provide one of the signals. Slidably mounted measurement wheels insure tangential engagement of opposite sides of the wireline with equal pressure. Low-load signal generators each responsive to the rotation of the opposing wheels provide independent signals, each ideally corresponding to the movement of the wirline engaged between them. Magnetic marks written on the wireline are sensed and provide yet another independent signal. Automatic processing of these signals provides alarms and corrections for slippage, variations in measurement tension, and cable stretch.
