An adaptive system for harvesting hydrokinetic energy from flowing fluid uses a hydrofoil-type vane in a flow-way and an electrical power generator to convert torque generated by the oscillating vane to electrical current. The generator may be electromagnetic or piezoelectric. The system includes a control module that measures the oscillation of the vane, the generated torque, or the characteristics of the generated current, and modifies the resistance of the vane or the conversion of the electrical current in response to changes therein. Some systems include a frame that can be anchored in a body of water. Some systems are portable and provide illumination. Some systems are adapted for use as hiking or camping gear and may be inserted into stream beds or used as walking sticks. Some systems are in-line devices. Some systems are adapted as fishing lures.

Adaptive hydrokinetic energy harvesting system

A ballast water treatment system for treating ballast water for a vessel has a pathway for navigable raw water to the tank and a discharge for discharging water back to the body of navigable raw water. A back washable filter in the pathway receives the raw water and screens sediment from the raw water to produce initially processed water which contains at least some marine organisms. A UV or other biocidal device is connected between the filter and the ballast tank, for disabling or killing the marine organisms in the initially processed water to produce treated ballast water for the main outlet to the ballast tank.

Ballast water treatment system

A water pollution remediation system includes a plurality of decontamination modules that are self supporting and interconnectable for sequentially removing a plurality of different contaminants. The modules are designed to be independently transportable to a ship for decontaminating bilge water, in particular, after a fire when a foaming fire suppressant composition has been introduced into the bilge water. The modules may be placed on the deck of the ship, connected together and powered by the ship's hydraulic, electric and bilge pumping systems to provide comprehensive decontamination.

A centrifugal separator for purifying liquids containing impurities, has a main fluid conduit forming a passage with an inlet for receiving raw liquid to be purified, and first and second outlets. A discharge conduit is in the passage and is connected to the first outlet. A stator is positioned in the fluid passage for imparting an initial swirling axial movement to the raw liquid. A rotor positioned in the fluid passage upstream of the discharge conduit and downstream of the stator, imparts a further swirling axial movement to the raw water in the fluid passage for causing solids in the raw liquid to migrate outwardly. Clean liquid enters the discharge conduit to exit the separator via the first outlet, and solids laden liquid passes the discharge conduit and exits the separator via the second outlet.

Separator for liquids containing impurities

An apparatus and method for treating water to be supplied to a ballast tank uses a water pathway having a main inlet for connection to a body of navigable open raw water containing sediment and marine organisms, and a main outlet for connection to the vessel's ballast tank(s). A centrifugal separator is provided in the pathway and has a separator inlet for receiving the raw water. The centrifugal separator separates sediment with some water from the raw water to produce initially processed water which contains at least some marine organisms. The separator has a first outlet for returning the sediment with some water to the body of raw water and a second outlet for supplying the initially processed water to the pathway. A UV or chemical biocidal mechanism is connected to the second outlet and is in the pathway downstream of the centrifugal separator from the main inlet for receiving the initially processed water and for killing and/or altering the DNA of the marine organisms in the initially processed water to produce treated ballast water. A ballast pump is connected in the pathway, in line with the biocidal mechanism for pumping water along the pathway between the main inlet and the main outlet, and through the centrifugal separator and the biocidal mechanism.

Apparatus and method for treating water

A backflush conduit for an automatic back flushing filter having an inlet portion with a symmetrical converging bell-shaped cross-section, an outlet portion with a generally cylindrical shape, and a converging and reorienting transition portion connecting the inlet and outlet portions. Converging convex surfaces of the bell shaped opening smooth fluid inflow and prevent fulid separation. The transition portion interior contour redirects the fluid flow without inducing turbulence, resulting in more efficient backflushing to clean the entire filter element even at small element pore sizes.
