Fiber laden fluids may be used to separate two wellbore-service fluids as they travel through a tubular body, preventing their commingling. Such fluids obviate the need for mechanical devices such as wiper plugs, or special adjustment of the wellbore-service fluids' rheological properties. The wellbore-service fluids may be drilling fluids, spacer fluids, chemical washes, cement slurries, acidizing fluids, fracturing fluids, formation-consolidation fluids or gravel-pack fluids.

The invention is related in general to equipment and methods for preparing curved fibers in a batch or continuous process. Fiber strands comprising a thermoplastic material are placed on a cylindrical surface and heated such that they soften and become malleable. The fiber strands assume the curvature of the cylindrical surface and, upon cooling below their softening temperature, retain the curvature. The curved-fiber strands are then cut to a desired length.

A method for using the device comprises placing the device into the wellbore; allowing the fluid flowing axially to the wellbore wall to rotate the scratcher; removing a deposit at wellbore wall; and leaving a cleaned wellbore wall.

Fiber bundles are prepared by affixing at least two fibers with a binding agent. The binding agent is designed such that the fiber bundles remain intact as the fiber bundles are mixed with and suspended in a fluid. After the fiber bundles exit the mixing apparatus, the binding agent degrades and releases the individual fibers. This allows higher concentrations of fibers to be added to fluids without fouling the mixing apparatus.

The problem of fiber or particle settling in well cement slurries is addressed by providing a fluid containing two fiber components of differing properties. Such a well treatment fluid, comprising a base fluid; a first fiber component that it substantially more dense than the base fluid; and a second fiber component that has a density close to that of the base fluid and is relatively flexible.
