An appearance-modifying device (), for modifying the visual appearance of a surface covered thereby, comprising: first () and second () oppositely arranged optically transparent substrates; a spacer structure () spacing apart the first () and second () substrates in such a way that a space between the first () and second () substrates is divided into a plurality of cells (-). The appearance-modifying device further has, in each cell (-), an optically transparent fluid () having a plurality of particles () dispersed therein, the particles being moveable in the fluid () through application of an electric field; and first () and second () electrodes arranged to simultaneously, by application of a voltage across the electrodes, control a distribution of the particles () within each of a plurality of the cells (-) from a first, dispersed state in which an appearance of the surface covered by the appearance-modifying device is determined by optical properties of the particles (), to a second state in which the particles () are concentrated adjacent to at least one of the first () and second () electrodes in such a way that the appearance-modifying device () becomes optically transparent.

Appearance-modifying device, and method for manufacturing such a device

A dual-layer coating for application in a steam-generating device is disclosed. A impermeable first layer thermally insulates the heated surface, while a second, porous layer enlarges the contact area, leading to an efficient conversion of liquid into vapor.

Coating for a steam-generating device

Disclosed is a layer for use in a domestic appliance, based on a sol-gel precursor. This layer can be obtained by screen-printing and comprises an organosilane compound. The layer is obtained from a concentrated pre-polymerized sol-gel precursor. The layer can be used as an insulating layer or as a conductive layer in a heating element. Furthermore, the layer can be used for decorative purposes.

A heating element includes an electrically insulating layer and an electrically conductive layer. At least the electrically conductive layer is based on a hybrid sol-gel precursor including an organosilane compound.

A sol-gel coating composition comprising fluoropolymer particles is disclosed. The fluoropolymer particles are distributed homogeneously in the coating, leading to scratch-resistant anti-stick and low-friction coatings that are suitable, for example, for electrical and non-electrical domestic appliances.

Disclosed is a domestic appliance, at least comprising an aluminum sole plate which is provided with a coating which is provided by means of a sol-gel process and wherein an intermediate layer is present between the aluminum sole plate and the sol-gel coating. The intermediate layer comprises a multi-layer structure. Also described is a method of manufacturing such a domestic appliance. The method comprises the steps of providing an aluminum substrate, applying a porous intermediate layer of aluminum oxide by electrochemical treatment of the aluminum sole plate in an electrolyte comprising a solution of phosphoric acid, applying a dense intermediate layer of aluminum oxide by electrochemical treatment in an electrolyte, and providing a sol-gel coating on the treated substrate.

Domestic appliance and method of manufacturing thereof

An LCD having the liquid crystal in at least a portion of the interpixel region displaced by a spacer material. The spacer material has a low dielectric constant relative to the liquid crystal, thus further impeding the formation of a bend deformation in the liquid crystal in the interpixel region when pixels on opposite sides of the spacer material are operating in the inversion mode. This elimination of the bend deformation in the interpixel region eliminates the reverse tilt disclination.

The invention provides optical modulation devices and displays of the DHFLCtype having a high contrast. Said modulation devices comprise a first substrate and a second substrate which are positioned substantially parallel to each other and which are provided, on their facing surfaces, with, in succession, an electrode layer and an orientation layer. This advantageous effect is achieved by using different orientation layers, the surfaced energy of the orientation layer of the first substrate being different from the surface energy of the orientation layer of the second substrate, said difference in surface energy being at least 5 mN/m. The orientation layer having the high surface energy is preferably made from rubbed polyimide, and the orientation layer having the low surface energy is preferably made from unrubbed polyorganosilsesquioxane. The optically active layer of the modulation devices in accordance with the invention exhibits a 'tilted-bookshelf' structure.

Distorted-helix ferroelectric liquid-crystalline optical modulation

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a substrate having a modified orientation layer and a liquid-crystalline display device comprising such a substrate. The orientation layer is made from a polymer and is modified with organic groups which induce a pretilt in the liquid-crystalline material when they are used in a liquid-crystalline display device. According to the invention, for modifying the orientation layer use is made of a precursor compound of the organic groups which is vaporized, whereafter the substrate carrying the orientation layer is exposed to the vapour formed in the process. Preferably, the orientation layer comprises hydroxyl groups such as PVA, and a carboxylic acid halogenide such as an alkyloyl chloride is used as the precursor. A further favourable combination comprises orientation layers of polyamide acid and alkylamine precursor compounds.
