An apparatus and method for implementing successive treatments on samples, such as samples of fibers, in particular hair. The method is performed by applying at least one liquid followed by drying the samples. The apparatus includes a plurality of beakers each adapted to receive a sample and into which at least one treatment liquid is fed via a feeding device. The apparatus further includes a flow device for establishing a flow of drying gas in each beaker.

The device for the compression of a gas comprises a motor (1), a piston (2) adapted to be displaced linearly in a pump body, transmission means (T) between the motor (1) and the piston (2) adapted to convert the rotary motion generated by the motor (1) into a reciprocating translatory motion by the piston (2). Speed varying means comprising a cam (12) are provided to impart a different speed to the piston (2) of the compressor according to the resistance opposing the motor (1) during one complete admission/compression cycle, so that the resisting torque is substantially constant and so that the motor (1) operates at its maximum torque and therefore at maximum efficiency. The section of the cam (12) is determined so as to ensure substantially isothermal compression of the gas.

A dispenser having a reciprocating pump to feed a liquid product to a mixing chamber and an air pump with a piston to simultaneously compress and feed compressed air to the mixing chamber. The body containing the mixing chamber is mounted on the product pump and the air piston is mounted on the body. Manual pressure on the air piston is transmitted to the body which moves down to cause the product pump to reciprocate. The product pump includes a chamber with a valve which opens only after the pressure in the chamber exceeds a certain value. The air pump includes a valve which opens only after the air pressure exceeds a certain value. The air pressure valve is selected to open at the same time as the pump valve opens so that the product is dispensed as a spray.

A container for storing and dispensing a liquid product includes a pump operated by a reciprocable control member and associated with a pneumatic servo system. The actuation is achieved by supply of gas pressure, for example, from a reservoir of gas at a pressure of the order of 5 bars, and this is used to actuate the control member of the pump, for example a stepped piston incorporating a pressure multiplying effect. Much higher operating forces on the reciprocable control member can be achieved with this system than were possible by purely manual operation of the valve control member.
