A control methodology for an engine-driven electric machine of a hybrid vehicle electrical system for enabling continued operation of the vehicle electrical system under failure mode conditions that require or result in disconnection of the battery pack from the electrical system. At the onset of a fault condition requiring battery disconnection, the electric machine is controlled to drive the battery pack current toward zero before disconnecting the battery pack. Once the battery pack is disconnected, whether by relay or fuse, the electric machine is controlled to maintain the bus voltage of the electrical system at a specified value. In both operating modes, the electric machine is controlled based on a synchronous vector current command that is determined directly as a function of the control objective (zero battery pack current or maintaining bus voltage) for improved response time compared to a traditional torque-based control.

A method for determining the optimum fuel injection timing angle in a CI engine provided with means disposed in one or more cylinders for measuring Indicated Mean Effective Pressure. The pressure level during the power stroke of a piston is a direct correlate of engine torque being generated, and the timing of fuel injection can increase or decrease the amount of torque. Thus, maximum torque can be obtained by optimizing the timing of fuel injection. An algorithm in the ECM varies the timing of fuel injection in a narrow range until a IMEP maximum is achieved, which timing is then retained and employed until the engine operating conditions change. Thus, the invention can optimize fuel economy by optimizing the torque obtained from each injection of fuel into the cylinders.

Method for optimizing fuel injection timing in a compression ignition engine

Disclosed herein are fuel reformers utilizing dew point plateau process control and methods of using the same. In one embodiment the fuel reformer can comprise a mixing zone capable of receiving a fuel mixture, a reforming zone disposed downstream from the mixing zone, an exhaust zone disposed downstream from the in operable communication with the reforming zone, a temperature sensor, and a system controller connected in operable communication with the temperature sensor. The temperature sensor can be disposed in fluid communication with the exhaust zone and capable of measuring a gas temperature of the gas stream, or in fluid communication with the mixing zone and capable of measuring a mixture temperature of the fuel mixture. The system controller can be capable of adjusting an operating variable of the fuel reformer and determining a dew point plateau temperature.

An Engine Control Module includes an electronic controller for controlling the position of an EGR valve, the timing of opening and closing of the engine combustion valves, and the timing of the individual cylinder fuel injectors of an engine. Each engine cylinder includes a pressure sensor. Peak cylinder pressure is sent to the ECM during each firing cycle. The ECM is programmed with required maximum percentages of EGR and optimal combustion valve timing for each engine operating condition, and sets the EGR valve and/or the camshaft phaser accordingly to adjust combustion in all the engine cylinders. The ECM also compares the measured peak pressure for each cylinder and adjusts the timing of fuel injection for the next firing cycle to trim the measured peak pressure in each cylinder to a predetermined level at or below the maximum allowable peak firing pressure for the engine.

Apparatus and method for controlling maximum cylinder pressure in an internal combustion engine

A method for compensating fuel injection timing when a torque signal or throttle command indicates that a transient operation is about to transpire. The control adjusts the fuel injection timing in advance of the transient operation to prevent loss of torque due to change in combustion phase position. During engine operation in pre-mix mode of combustion, rapid changes in fueling quantity can affect the combustion angle as well as the temperature in the combustion chamber, causing late or early combustion phasing. The present invention anticipates a change in combustion phasing by sensing a change in demanded fueling rate. The Engine Control Module (ECM) then applies a nest of algorithms to advance fuel injection timing during acceleration or to shorten ignition delay for deceleration by retarding fuel injection timing. As the engine returns to steady state operation, the compensation in injection timing is progressively reduced to zero.

Method and system are provided that allow determining in a vehicle having two or more sources of electrical energy what corrective action needs to be undertaken in the event one of the energy sources, due to malfunctions and/or environmental conditions, is not able to carry through a cranking event. The system, by way of a bidirectional DC/DC converter, has the capability to transfer electrical energy in either direction between the energy sources. The system includes a controller configurable with computer-readable logic or intelligence that enables the controller to make a decision based on appropriate source parameters, e.g., temperature, to automatically determine when, where, and how much energy needs to be transferred. This decision will enhance the opportunity to successfully perform the next starting or cranking event.

Method for internally jump starting an internal combustion engine for a land-based vehicle

An improved surge suppression control for a motor vehicle drivetrain detects and suppresses drivetrain oscillation in a predetermined range of frequencies centered on an estimate of the natural frequency of the drivetrain. The drivetrain natural frequency is determined based on the current speed ratio of the vehicle transmission and empirically determined vehicle characteristics, and is used to define the center frequency of a band-pass filter responsive to engine speed. The filter output represents the AC component of the engine speed in a range of frequencies centered on the driveline natural frequency, and such component is differentiated to form an acceleration component in phase synchronism with the torque causing the detected resonance. An electric machine mechanically coupled to the engine is energized in accordance with the inverse of the acceleration component to actively cancel the detected resonance whenever the acceleration component exceeds a noise threshold that also is adjusted based on the estimated natural frequency of the drivetrain.

Method and system for controlling an induction machine are provided. The method allows to sense rotor position of the induction machine using a relatively low-resolution rotor position sensor configured to supply a stream of pulses indicative of angular increments as the rotor position changes. A memory device is used for storing a synchronous angle boost function. The method further allows to retrieve from the memory device at least one function parameter for providing a synchronous angle boost during a start up mode of operation of the induction machine. Upon sensing a predetermined number of pulses from the rotor position sensor, the method allows to switch from the start up mode of operation to a normal mode of operation, wherein the boost provided to the synchronous angle is discontinued upon switching to the normal mode of operation.

Method, system and controller for electronically controlling a park-interlock device in a land-based vehicle are provided. The method allows for providing a driver-selectable shifter for selecting a respective one of a plurality of propulsion modes of the vehicle. One of the propulsion modes is a park mode.
