An oral hygiene appliance includes a base on which upstands a cabinet having top, front and rear vertical walls. A pair of recesses are formed in either side of that front wall. A plurality of seats within those recesses are each receptive of a jet tip. An inlet is defined in the top wall. A cover is shaped to envelope the cabinet over the recesses and the inlet with the cover being invertable to serve as a reservoir. Disposed within the cabinet is a pump responsive to a pressure control for delivering water received from the inlet. Seated toward one end of the base is the lower end of an elongated electric toothbrush body. Individual brushes are seated in the base around the body and those brushes ordinarily to the rear of the body are elevated on a pedestal. At the opposite end of the base is a well in which is seated the lower end of a handle in which a faceted lower end of one of the jet tips may be captivated. A pressure control unit cooperates with the pump assembly to guard against excessive pressure and permit easy control of the level of pressure delivered from the jet tip mounted in the handle.

Oral hygiene appliance

A water filter cartridge has a cylindrical shell. A conduit runs between closing end walls and is disposed within a filtration material. There are additional openings in the respective end walls for communicating the flow of water through the material. A water filtration element of a porous medium is shaped to nest within a portion of the shell encircling a corresponding portion of the filtration material and defining space between the medium and the inner side wall of the shell with that space being in the water flow path from one of the end walls and the material through the medium. A reference color is exhibited over a portion of the exterior side wall of the shell adjacent to the location of the medium inside the shell, and the medium exhibits a given color upon beginning of usage but changes color with continued usage in response to its entrapment of matter in the water. The shell is transparent over the medium to enable the user to compare the medium color to the reference color. The filtration material is secured in place by a plug forming one of the end walls and which has an opening around its periphery with a water pervious ring being sandwiched between that peripheral opening and the space defined on the outside of the filtration medium.

Water filter cartridge

Hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide are catalytically removed from air at room temperatures. Air containing H.sub.2 S and HCN in dilute concentrations is contacted with a dry, activated catalyst formed of palladium (II) and copper (II) salts such as chlorides, on an alumina substrate, at a temperature in the range of -20.degree. C. to 85.degree. C. The catalyst may also contain nickel (II) chloride.

Method for removing gaseous pollutants in highly dilute concentrations

A filter for cigarettes or the like has an elongated tubular shell one interior end portion of which may be shaped to define a seat of a diameter to frictionally receive an end portion of a cigarette and longitudinally of that seat being shaped to define a tubular wall of predetermined cross-section and partially closed by a transverse wall in which is defined a central aperture. An air inlet extends through the outer wall of the shell. A filter element is of a porous material which is inhibitive to the passage of substances such as tar and nicotine. The element is in the form of an elongated hollow sleeve one end of which is closed and the other end of which is open. A laterally projecting shoulder is defined on the sleeve to have the aforementioned predetermined cross-section so as to seat frictionally within the tubular wall and against the transverse wall with a portion of the sleeve projecting through the aperture.

Smoking filters

A cigarette filter includes a barrel, a mouthpiece at one end and a cigarette-receptive tip at the other. A restricted orifice extends through a transverse wall within the barrel. An air inlet extends through the barrel wall at a location toward the mouthpiece from the transverse wall. Received within the barrel is a stem that defines a passage for the flow of smoke, and the inlet also communicates with that passage. The stem includes a nose which is spaced from the outlet end of the orifice and defines a collection area for particulate matter included in the smoke. A system concept includes a combination of a plurality of such filters in each successive one of which the orifice is of respectively decreased diameter and the air inlet is of respectively increased diameter. The relationship of those diameters is such that different ones of the filters establish a substantially constant impedance to the drawing of smoke and air through the mouthpiece.
