A process for the preparation of oil-containing microcapsules by interfacial condensation of a polyfunctional amine with a polyfunctional wall-forming material is disclosed. Microcapsules produced by this process have utility in the manufacture of carbonless copy paper. The process comprises emulsifying a mixture of a hydrophobic phase, which includes an oil, a chromogenic material and an oil soluble polyfunctional wall-forming material, and a hydrophilic phase, which includes water, a water soluble emulsifying agent and a water soluble salt of the desired polyfunctional amine. The amine salt may be formed in situ in the hydrophilic phase before the emulsification step. After emulsification, sufficient base is added to the emulsion to convert the polyfunctional amine salt to a polyfunctional amine and to neutralize acid formed during subsequent condensation reactions, thus initiating the reaction of the polyfunctional amine with the oil soluble polyfunctional wall-forming material and thus forming microcapsule walls around droplets of the hydrophobic phase.

Encapsulation process

A process is provided for producing a pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheet comprising preparing a solution of a first chromogenic material, the solution of the first chromogenic material including at least one chromogenic compound dissolved in a carrier oil, and the first chromogenic material being reactive with a second chromogenic material in the presence of the carrier oil to form a color. The solution of the first chromogenic material is mixed with a liquid radiation curable substance to form a coating composition, the liquid radiation curable substance being curable to a frangible resin and compatible with the color-forming capabilities of said first chromogenic material. A film forming material is applied to a substrate, the film forming material being settable to form a barrier layer which substantially prevents penetration of the substrate by the coating composition upon application of the coating composition to the substrate. The film forming material is then set to form the barrier layer on the substrate, and a film of the coating composition is applied over the barrier layer. The coating composition is then cured by subjecting the coating composition to radiation for a period of time sufficient to cure the coating composition containing the radiation curable substance to a frangible resinous film, the frangible resinous film being cured to a frangibility that will permit passage of the solution of the first chromogenic material to the exposed surface of the frangible resinous film when the frangible resinous film is broken. A novel chromogenic composition is produced comprising at least one color precursor dissolved in a carrier oil, the carrier oil being a weakly polar solvent having a boiling point of from about 180.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C., the color precursor being of the electron donor type and being reactive with color developers of the electron acceptor type to form an image and a liquid radiation curable substance, the liquid radiation curable substance being selected from the group consisting of isocyanate modified acrylic, methacrylic and itaconic acid esters of polyhydric alcohols, acrylic prepolymers derived from partial esterification of pentaerythritol with acrylic acid and acrylic acid esters and mixtures thereof, the liquid radiation curable substance being curable to a frangible resin upon exposure to radiation. The coating composition has a viscosity in the range of about 1000 cps. to about 3500 cps. A pressure-sensitive, carbonless transfer sheet is produced comprising a paper substrate having coated thereon a barrier layer and a cured resinous film coated on said barrier layer, the cured resinous film being a radiation cured film of the novel chromogenic coating composition having a frangibility that will permit passage of the color precursor and the carrier oil to the surface of the cured resinous film when the cured resinous film is broken, the color precursor solution being retained as small occulsions within a matrix of closely packed cross-linked molecular chains of cured resin.

Pressure-sensitive transfer sheets using novel radiation curable coatings

A novel chromogenic composition is produced comprising at least one color precursor dissolved in a carrier oil, the carrier oil being a weakly polar solvent having a boiling point of from about 180.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C., the color precursor being of the electron donor type and being reactive with color developers of the electron acceptor type to form an image and a liquid radiation curable substance, the liquid radiation curable substance being selected from the group consisting of isocyanate modified acrylic, methacrylic and itaconic acid esters of polyhydric alcohols, acrylic prepolymers derived from partial esterification of pentaerythritol with acrylic acid and acrylic acid esters and mixtures thereof, the liquid radiation curable substance being curable to a frangible resin upon exposure to radiation. The coating composition has a viscosity in the range of about 1000 cps. to about 3500 cps. A pressure-sensitive, carbonless transfer sheet is produced comprising a paper substrate having coated thereon a barrier layer and a cured resinous film coated on said barrier layer, the cured resinous film being a radiation cured film of the novel chromogenic coating composition having a frangibility that will permit passage of the color precursor and the carrier oil to the surface of the cured resinous film when the cured resinous film is broken, the color precursor solution being retained as small occlusions within a matrix of closely packed cross-linked molecular chains of cured resin.

Novel radiation curable coating compositions for pressure-sensitive

A pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheet comprising a paper substrate having a front and back surface and a coating compositon adhered to at least one of the front and back surfaces of the paper substrate. The coating composition is set to a flexible, tack-free coat, and the coating composition includes a solvent free non-aqueous hot melt suspending medium which is characterized by being substantially water insoluble, being characterized by the presence of one or more functional groups selected from the group consisting of: carboxyl, carbonyl, hydroxyl, ester, amide, amine, heterocyclic groups and combinations thereof to impart polarity thereto and having a melting point of from about 60.degree. C. to about 140.degree. C. and a melting point range of less than about 15.degree. C. In addition the coating composition includes an encapsulated, chromogenic material which is substantially dispersed therein, the hot melt suspending medium being compatible with the color forming characteristics of the capsular chromogenic material. This invention further includes a liquid chromogenic coating compositon which comprises a hot melt suspending medium in combination with a microencapsulated chromogenic material. The chromogenic material is a color precursor of the electron donating type which is mixed with a carrier oil to form an oil solution of the chromogenic color precursor material which is then combined with one or more wall forming compounds.

Pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheets using hot melt systems

A pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheet comprising a paper substrate having a front and back surface and a coating composition adhered to at least one of the front and back surfaces of the paper substrate. The coating composition is set to a flexible, tack-free coat, and the coating composition includes a solvent free non-aqueous hot melt suspending medium which is characterized by being substantially water insoluble, being characterized by the presence of one or more functional groups selected from the group consisting of: carboxyl, carbonyl, hydroxyl, ester, amide, amine, heterocyclic groups and combinations thereof to impart polarity thereto and having a melting point of from about 60.degree. C. to about 140.degree. C. and a melting point range of less than about 15.degree. C. In addition the coating composition includes an encapsulated, chromogenic material which is substantially dispersed therein, the hot melt suspending medium being compatible with the color forming characteristics of the capsular chromogenic material. This invention further includes a liquid chromogenic coating composition which comprises a hot melt suspending medium in combination with a microencapsulated chromogenic material. Chromogenic hot melt coating compositions

A pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheet comprising a paper substrate having a front and back surface and a coating composition adhered to at least one of the front and back surfaces of the paper substrate. A novel process is provided for producing a pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheet which comprises the steps of preparing a hot melt suspending medium, the hot melt suspending medium being water insoluble and having a melting point of from about 60.degree. C. to about 140.degree. C. and a melting point range of less than about 15.degree. C. A microencapsulated chromogenic material is prepared and dispersed in the hot melt suspending medium, the chromogenic material being a color precursor of the electron donating type. A coating dispersion is prepared by combining the hot melt suspending medium with the microencapsulated chromogenic color precursor material, the hot melt suspending medium being compatible with the color forming or developing characteristics of the chromogenic material. The coating dispersion is then applied to a substrate, the coating dispersion being applied at a coat weight of from about 1.0 pounds to about 8.0 pounds per 3300 square feet of substrate at a coat thickness of from about 1 micron to about 50 microns. The coated substrate is set by cooling the coating dispersion.

Process for producing pressure-sensitive carbonless manifolds

A process is provided for producing a pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheet comprising preparing a solution of a first chromogenic material, the solution of the first chromogenic material including at least one chromogenic compound dissolved in a carrier oil, and the first chromogenic material being reactive with a second chromogenic material in the presence of the carrier oil to form a color. The solution of the first chromogenic material is mixed with a liquid radiation curable substance to form a coating composition, the liquid radiation curable substance being curable to a frangible resin and compatible with the color-forming capabilities of said first chromogenic material. A film forming material is applied to a substrate, the film forming material being settable to form a barrier layer which substantially prevents penetration of the substrate by the coating composition upon application of the coating composition to the substrate. The film forming material is then set to form the barrier layer on the substrate, and a film of the coating composition is applied over the barrier layer. The coating composition is then cured by subjecting the coating composition to radiation for a period of time sufficient to cure the coating composition containing the radiation curable substance to a frangible resinous film, the frangible resinous film being cured to a frangibility that will permit passage of the solution of the first chromogenic material to the exposed surface of the frangible resinous film when the frangible resinous film is broken.

Process for producing pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer sheets

A process is provided for producing a pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer or record sheet comprising the steps of preparing a liquid chromogenic coating composition by mixing chromogenic material with a liquid radiation curable substance, the chromogenic material comprising either an acidic color developer of the electron donator type or a color precursor of the electron accepting type. The liquid coating composition is coated onto a web or substrate at a coat weight of from about 0.2 pounds to about 8.0 pounds per 3300 square feet of substrate. The coated web is then exposed to radiation for a time sufficient to cure the liquid coating composition to a tack-free film. A novel liquid chromogenic coating composition is produced, the coating composition comprising a chromogenic material and a radiation curable substance. A pressure-sensitive copy sheet is produced, the copy sheet comprising a substrate having a plurality of surfaces at least one of the surfaces being coated with a tack-free film, the film comprising a radiation cured resin containing a chromogenic material dispersed.

This invention relates to a process for the production of a manifold carbonless form having one or more surfaces coated with capsular chromogenic material. The process comprises providing a plurality of continuous webs, at least one web of the plurality of continuous webs being marked with a pattern and at least one non-aqueous, solvent-free coating of the capsular, chromogenic material being applied to at least a portion of at least one continuous web of the plurality of continuous webs. The non-aqueous, solvent-free coating is then set followed by collating of the plurality of continuous webs. The collated, continuous webs are placed in contiguous relationship to one another to create a manifold form. After the continuous webs are placed in collated, contiguous relationship they can be finished by any combination of the steps of combining, partitioning, stacking, packaging and the like. This invention also relates to the manifold form which is the product of the process of this invention.

Manifold carbonless form and process for the production thereof

This invention relates to a process for the continuous production of a manifold carbonless form having one or more surfaces coated with capsular chromogenic material. The process comprises providing a plurality of continuous webs and advancing each continuous web of the plurality of continuous webs at substantially the same speed, the plurality of continuous webs being spaced apart and being advanced in a cooperating relationship with one another. At least one web of the plurality of continuous webs is marked with a pattern and at least one non-aqueous, solvent-free coating of the capsular, chromogenic material is applied to at least a portion of at least one continuous web of the plurality of continuous webs. The non-aqueous, solvent-free coating is then set followed by collating of the plurality of continuous webs. The collated, continuous webs are placed in contiguous relationship to one another to create a manifold form. After the continuous webs are placed in collated, contiguous relationship they can be finished by any combination of the steps of combining, partitioning, stacking, packaging and the like. This invention also relates to the manifold form which is the product of the process of this invention.

Manifold carbonless form and process for the continuous production

A relatively uniform thin coating of a solid phenolic reactant can be applied to a paper base by contacting said paper base with a thin film of a solution consisting essentially of said phenolic reactant in a volatile organic solvent and immediately evaporating said solvent and, unexpectedly, said phenolic reactant is retained essentially completely on the contacted surface of the paper base. Thusly applied, it has been found that well defined colored marks are formed on the surface of the paper base on marking the surface with a colorless marking ink.
